lexan (polycarbonite) cabin hatches

my hatches are shredding up in weather. i had to make them with regular plywood due to being on a bicycle.

so i was shopping for marine plywood, when i came across a thread mentioning clear plastic (lexan) hatch covers.

has anyone tried this on a vega and how do you like it?

does the clear look good on a vega?

I've read that with polycarbonate vs. delrin (is that a brand name?) one degrades faster than the other in UV. I can't remember which is better.Alan

My wife wants them. It's basically polycarbonate (Lexan) vs. acrylic (Plexiglass). I've read a lot of arguments on both sides, but I still don't know which one I'd use.I think I'm gonna use wood. ;)

Not Delrin (good for bearings) but acrylic, better known as Plexiglas. Harder than polycarbonite (known better as Lexan) and also less likely to scratch or craze. Virtually all commercially made hatches (Lewmar, Goiot, etc) use acrylic.

MY experience over the years has been the lex an is initially
stronger than Plexiglas an more expensive but after some time in
the sun it becomes weaker. So in the last 20 years I have used
Plexiglas. I use pan head screws to hold it in place and I drill
the holes in the glass about 1/32 to 1/16 oversize so as the
glass expands from hot temperatures it won't crack when the glass
tightens against the screws Never counter sink the glass and use
flat head screws it will almost surely crack around the screws. Of
course you have to put caulking in the holes so they won't
leak. Doug

We re-did our companionway hatch boards out of 1/2 inch polycarbonate years ago and have been very pleased with the results. We also replaced the teak sliders that they fit in with stainless steel flat stock that is through bolted to the aft cabin bulkhead.
A couple of grab rails are installed on each side. It has been an essentially bulletproof setup. (Polycarbonate is frequently used for bulletproof windows.) WaltFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com on behalf of ground hog groundhogyh@... [AlbinVega] AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com

For the most part they are in the shade of the dodger. They appear to be in great condition. They do have a somewhat fogged appearance to them but I beliee it would wash off. I haven't tried because my wife doesn't want anyone to b able to look through
the boards when she is changing. It does let a lot more light in. WaltFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com on behalf of ground hog groundhogyh@... [AlbinVega] AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com

I'd love to see those pics as well, to see what I'm not letting my wife have. Might want to "give in" and let her have her way. LOL The thing is, I'm making a set out of some extra sapele plywood I had lying around, and they're half done already. I kinda hate to switch horses now.I wonder how many folks in the lower latitudes (Florida and below) care about the extra light? The hatchboards on our C22 seldom get used while we're on board.

I tried sending an attachment but I guess it didn't go through. Any one wanting me to send the picture of my polycarbonate hatch boards please email me off of the Vega site at bestvega@....Walt
