Caulking?

It may be time to replace the old caulking with new silicone caulk all around the outside of the leaking hatch. Remove as much of old caulk as possible and clean well before applying new caulk.

You may want to make sure that the current stuff is silicone based....once you use silicone on these, NOTHING else is going to stick, unless you really, really remove all traces of silicone and the silicone,

and silicone, whilst looking pretty - will not seal or stick to the current "caulking" for more than a few weeks

ie....make sure you are talking caulk, silicone, etc....and not DOW 795, which is what hunter initially used on a lot of windows and hatch rings...

YMMV, and it is your boat...

I agree......

Silicone products are not for use where it is continually or frequently submerged for any duration.

I If you are willing to take the time trimming, Butyl gasketing, trimmed properly, with Polyurethane caulk on the exterior is difficult to beat, and frequently lasts 20 years. You dont want the buty tape/gasket exposed when complete.

Mark:

I believe you can purchase the gasket material from this site. You may want to look it up or give Dave a call at the HOW store.

Can you tell if it is the gasket or the bedding material that is leaking?

I believe gasket material

Judging by how and when the water comes in, usualy when the hatch is awash and the drain channel is full not a drip but admiral calls it a waterfall . I believe it is rhe gasket.. The sealant around the acrylic or lexan, whatever lewmar used,is still intact.. I believe I can check this by putting h2o on the hatch sealant edge only .

This is what it sounds like to me based on how you worded your problem.
Check to see that you are closing the hatch all the way. These hatches have a venting position. And a fully closed position. Check for operator error.

On my 376 it was not the gasket; the symptoms were the same.

When the hatch was removed, it was found that the factory cut the hole in the deck too big on two sides. The screws on two sides just went into caulk. Two sides had to be built up with fiberglass, then screw holes made in the fiberglass and then the hatch was bedded and screwed down. No leaks for twelve years.

My rubber gaskets are leaking on my Lewmar Hatches. I am currently in contact with Lewmar about buying replacement gaskets. I will let you know what I fine out.

Please let me know lewmar info

Thanks sailgunner. I would appreciate your posting here info about lewmar gaskets. FYI I got a very helpful email from Eddie Breeden regarding hatch sizes used on 376's. Good to hear from Him. Maybe Hunter does monitor this site ?? Also I am bit confused as to why an improper cut out would start to leak after 16 years and not before. Certainly will check it out.

Josh at Lewmar can help you. They have seal kits for the hatches. I sent him pictures and sizes and he provided the part numbers for the seal kits. His email is: josh@lewmarusa.com

Thank you

I will measure the hatches this weekend. Thanks again for your response. Did Josh think the gaskets were the problem?

Hatch Gasket Leak

Hi -

I have a leak in one of my Lewmar size 60 hatches - I can see the water dripping in at the corner - it drips between the acrylic and the black rubber gasket.

I believe I will need to order a gasket replacement - but what sealant is used ?

Also - I have looked all over the lewmar site, and cannot find ANY documents on how to disassemble the hatch to replace the gasket. (Lots of stuff on replacing/installing the whole hatch, but nothing I can see on replacing the gasket).

Any links to this info would be greatly appreciated !

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks Dave. It is a size 60 medium profile.

I do use the SBO store occasionally, but only when I can drive down to the border and pick up the package myself......shipping charges to Canada are killer sometimes - in this case I will try to locate them in-country.

As an example - I just bought some custom wine glasses from SBO - shipping to Ottawa was going to be close to 40 bucks.....but was only 8 to ship to Ogdensburg NY(about 40 minutes drive)......as you can guess, I had you guys ship to the NY address !

Oops - sorry for replying to my own post - but I don't want to spread mis-information.

The Lewmar hatches on our 2007 H36 are LOW profile, not mid profile. I double checked the thickness of the top frame - it is 22mm - which is the low profile hatch.

Just wanted to clarify for other owners.

I have the same problem on my 1991 H42. I went to remove the hatch recently to re-seat with butyl, but could not work out how to remove the hatch. Removed all screws and , boy, they was no way it was going to budge- is there a set procedure for removing ??

when I did mine, I waited for a hot day...that softens things up..then I used 6 or 8 small hardwood wedges. I started them in the "loose" spots and then tapped them gently every 12-15 minutes or so. That provide consistent lift and stretched the adhesive, enough to get a blade or spring hook in to cut the sealant. Then tapped a bit more. and so on. It took well over an hour, but I had no damage to the hatch or the coach house roof.

Sadly when I got it out, I found that all the fasteners were so corroded, that I called pompanette/bomar and bought a new one from Defender, as they had it in stock and I was only "hatchless" for a couple days.

I used MS butyl to remount, after I did some epoxy injection in to the original screw holes as they did not come close to matching those of the new hatch. I also faired the radius of the "hole" and sealed up the area between the two layers of glass.

Hope this helps.
