I am considering the purchase of 40 inch folding wheel which is 4 inches bigger than my current wheel. At the end of the day I will either have to fold the wheel down to fit under my binnacle cover or buy a new bigger cover to fit the larger wheel. Just curious if you fold your wheel down every day? I am assuming this to be an easy task? It wil be expensive enough to buy this wheel (approx $700 USD), without having to buy another binnacle cover which I bought just 2 years ago. Thanks for your comments.

I fold the wheel while at the dock. It allows easier movement in the cockpit. It is easy to fold as there are 2 plastic nuts that hold the securing spokes together. I use a small bungee chord to hold it folded rather than the integrated bungee in the nuts.

Yes

I keep it folded when ever not sailing, itstays folded all the time bacause that's why it folds to allow easy to walk past it.
When anchored over night it's folded and at the dock also and easy to unfold and even not planned but steered while sailing the boat folded.
Yes my cover fits over my whole helm and folding table while the wheel is folded,it unfolds easy and even unfolded last minute while motoring from anchored .

YES, we always fold it down, very easy, very nice.......its the reason it folds! Our old cover fits well enough.

Jake.. why do you use a separate bungee and not the ones built in?

I know this isn't your question, but at $700 since it didn't come with the boat, and assumin you have an Edson pedistal (big assumption on my part), have you considered the Edson quick release wheel nut and storage adapter: http://www.edsonmarine.com/marinestore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=94&products_id=456

We use one on our boat and it is easy, quick and works great. Plus, just a fraction of the price of a new wheel, even at retail (we found ours on ebay). Anyway, just a thought.

Pat we fold ours in whenever the boat is not in operation. Makes for a very room cockpit! We really like it. Very easy to install as well.

Lewmar folding wheel

Thanks for the replies. Based on your comments I think I am going to buy one. SVC, I did consider the alternative but I don't think it would work with the wheel pilot I have.

Be careful if you have an autopilot. With your Mark II you might have clearance issues with the control panel and the autopilot.

Ask on the C36ia Forum for more details.

I had replaced my 36" wheel with a 40" Lewmar folding wheel. I also have a x-5 wheel pilot system. Works great. It makes for lots of additional space and takes seconds to fold and unfold.

Cheers

I use a separate bungee because I have seen too many of the integral bungee chords stretched and the balls hanging loose. That would drive me crazy. Yes, I am a little bit anal! :D

Oh understand! Ours are a tiny but loose but not an issue yet. But, when it is folded it is covered so not something I see much. I think when/if that happens I will just cut them off! But don'tcha just love the wheel.

We removed our auto pilot for now and have not missed it.
