IF you haven't taken that winch apart for decade and it still works alright, you should be PRAISING Lewmar :^)))
I actually think it's a pretty good design (any your experience with its durability is testament to that. That fitting could well have corroded shut with a different "cap".

Be careful when you reassemble that, as others have suggested, you don't overtighten and that don't cross thread anything.
Also -- use the right grease and other lubricants; and, DON'T GOOP it up with too much lubricant. Lewmar's site had a number of videos that make that clear. There are others on the web. TOO much lubricant is worse than a little too little.

Gunni,
I don't see any dogs on the top of the winch.
It's not like any of the newer evo styles lewmar makes today.
The stripper arm and entire top of the winch one cast piece, the drum rotates around the top section.
I have tapped on the stripper arm before and it will not move.

I am thinking that this is machine pressed on and is not serviceable.
Well, that would be about the worst design decision ever made. You could call Lewmar customer service... you may get lucky.

You know, as easy as a Lewmar Ocean series winch is to strip and clean (in place, no tools) I would be tempted to replace that winch with a Lewmar Ocean.

New winches or even old cleaned up winches always look good installed on a boat.

Newly installed ST 23 Barient winch. Learned the 22's use 5 bolts the 23's use six. Fortunately the engineers used the same pattern for both so I only had to line up the five matching and drill a 6th hole to install the winches.
