I requested a quote from four sailmakers (Doyle included) and for the same material, same specs, same hardware, Doyle was more; not just a little more, CONSIDERABLY more. The sails were for my previous boat, an O'day 272LE. The price quoted by Doyle was three time higher than what I paid at another reputable loft; and before you say anything, it wasn't offshore. As a matter of fact, they came and measured and returned and ensured a proper fit. When I needed a quote for my new boat (Nonsuch 30 Classic) I inquired at the Newport boat show. Show price was more than double your competitor. As a matter of fact, the sail WITH Strong Track was still considerably less than just the sail that Doyle quoted. Neither Doyle quotes included a stackpack. Both were the same weight, and standard cruising sails...nothing high-tech here. Not trying to knock Doyle; I have friends who purchased Doyle and are quite happy. Nor am I trying to put anyone on the spot. But from hearing from friends in the two clubs I belong to and from e-mail exchanges from this forum, the question begs to be answered. I guess I'm the one to ask it. Pricing

Bob I've seen high pricing but have never seen anyone including Doyle price sails 3 times that of the competition. In fact I have not ever seen pricing that was double so I am a bit confused. Most of the time our pricing is right in line with the the other major lofts such as North, Quantum, and UK. I have seen offshore sail pricing lower, but never to the extent you are talking about. We are the most experienced sailmaker with Nonsuch yachts, and I do know that we specify a particularly high grade of dacron for these sails. Having said that the cloth is only 45% more expensive, which would not explain a 300% markup. I would call the loft back that gave you the pricing and fax over the competitor's price. This is the only way you will be able to find out how the proposals really compare. Thanks, Bill C. Doyle Sails
