Leaky head

While it seems that there is no blockage and water manually flushed from the head flows through to the holding tank, water escapes from the unit handpump while pumping and after several minutes gray water seems to leak back into the bowl, even after completely emptying the bowl and locking the pump. It seems the prior owner purchased an entire head unit and replaced only the upper half of the unit (ie, the old base of the unit remains screwed to the floor). Of course, over time this begins to smell. The leakiness of the seals seems to have worsened over the two months since purchase of the boat, despite almost no use.

Welcome to the site. I would do a seach into replacing the Joker valve. It's probably overdue for a new one.

Your toilet is in need of new seals, o-rings, valves and gaskets... Because the price of a replacement pump assembly for the Jabsco Twist n Lock manual toilet is only about 10% more than the price of the service kit, it's quite common to replace the pump --which is easy to do and takes about 20 minutes--instead of removing the pump and taking it apart to replace everything in it. I'm sure that's what the previous owner did if the base appears older than the pump. No need to replace the base...the pump is the only working part. Flushing about a gallon of clean fresh water through to the tank before leaving the boat each time will keep the base and discharge line odor free.

If you don't have an owners manual for it, you can download one from here Jabsco Twist 'n' Lock Manual Toilets

Be careful not to over-tighten the bolts when you mount it on the base...too tight can cause tjat connection to leak. So start with hand tight, flush to check for leaking and if so, tighten all 4 evenly just a quarter turn...check again. only another 4 turn till no more leak.
