Leaking Mast Boot

The mast boot on our keel step mast is leaking. The boat is a 1995 Catalina 36 MkII. The water appears to enter between the mast and the boot, inspite of tightening the strap clamp as tight as possible. The boot is in good shape, it just does not make contact all the way around the mast. Should I consider using a caulk between the boot and the mast, a gasket of some sort, or something else to cure the problem?

Bill, We have a 46' Morgan..The previous owners installed a SPARTITE kit..its a mix that pors and creats a gasket..for us it has been excellent..no leaks at all.....However we shall see next fall when we pull the mast and replace in the spring....dont have a link but i know Boat US carries it. Good sailing!! Rob

Are you sure its leaking from there

and not possibly leaking from the top of the mast where the sheeves are?

Daylight between boot and mast

When below in the cabin you can sight up up the mast and see a small amount of daylight between the mast and the boot. The opening is very slight, maybe the thickness of a business card. We feel the water is coming in throught this slight crack. The strap clamp does not seem to push the boot snug to the mast all the way around, in spite of making it as tight as possible.
