Always check Defender before you buy any marine product. Lazy jacks, same identical system, are $45 to $100 cheaper than WM. That is just the catalog price, the actual price may be even cheaper.

Mortyd, do you have advice 'against' jacks?

I'm curious why you asked if Bob was absolutely sure he wanted them. Are there complications, cautions, etc. with lazy jacks that most folks don't think about? Paul

Look at EZJacks

Practical Sailor rated Lazy Jack systems a couple of years ago and recommended EZJacks. I just bought a set of them at the Annapolis Boat Show, and will be installing them on the Alchemist in a couple of weeks. One of the advantages of this system is that the EZJacks can be brought forward to the mast for storage when you are sailing, or when you want to put the sail cover on the boom (no modification is required) I had a Dutchman system on my previous main (it came with the boat), and it worked, sort-of. I looked for a web-site for EZJacks, but didn't find one. I did examine at the system when it arrived at my house, and was impressed with the apparent quality of the materials and trhe construction. You might want to consider this as an option. I'll look at the literature for an address when I get home. Steve Alchemist Holland, MI

well paul, i've met lots of folks who hated their lazy jacks - contantly getting tangled in the battens, just for one - and another poster is the first person i heard of who did not like his ducthman. among other things, besides flaking the sail easily, a dutchman makes reefing so much easier. they are more expensive, but many new boats - catalina 310 and 320 for example - come with dutchman and i know of no new boats that come with lazy jacks. i am not paid by dutchman, but suggest you ask around any marina.

no other experience, but

My boat is the first boat I've owned, and it already had Lazy Jacks installed. I don't know that they really do anything OTHER than catch the battens....I saw a Dutchman system on a Cat '42 and watched the guy singlehand the sails down to an almost perfect flake in about 1 minute. I may eventually upgrade my Lazy Jacks to the Dutchman if the cost of modifying the sails isn't prohibitive. Since I don't have any experience WITHOUT Lazy Jacks, my comments may not have that much value. Jim H. S/V JimmyDreams
