re "Any Ideas" -

My idea is - Don't cut large holes in the boat to install speakers. 1. Speaker cones are made of paper or foam and if they get wet, such as when taking on water, the boat could sink. 2. Speaker magnets can cause serious interference with the compass or auto pilot. If speakers are a must then I'd recommend 'hang-on' speakers to avoid item #1 and keep them -far- away from the compass (if you use one and if it's any good). Not all compasses are equal. Some speakers may come with a little backup plastic cover but this is no substitute for fiberglass.

I had the same concern

I had the same concern about cutting a large hole in the cockpit of my H23. I found heavy duty stainless steel mixing bowls that perfectly fit the large holes. The bowls go in from the outside with a thick gasket between the lip of the bowl and the side of the lazerette. The speaker is mounted to the lip of the bowl with a small hole on the bottom of the bowl for the speaker wires.

cockpit speaker ideas

Jeff I to had problems with cutting holes in my boat where sea water might frequent. My solution although maybe a bit different works very well. I ran the speaker wire on my 336 through both aft compartments in the cockpit. I use the starboard side for my two starter batteries and the port has my diesel heater. I got the bose indoor outdoor speakers and attached two of those metal "broom handle" holders to the bottom of each. Hooked the speaker wire from the compartments to each. When I want to put "buffet" on with a boat drink, I just attach them to the stainless rails just forward of the catbird seats... they fit there perfectly and aim toward the cockpit. I hooked a 8" bungee to the top and give one wrap around the rail when the wind in "knockdown alley" is up. Keeps them upright. Even painted them to match the hull color. When back in the slip, I just unattach from the rails and store out of the weather. Also put them on the fader so I can set them for conversation mode on deck but still get some thump out of the ten inch subwoofer and two 5 1/2 inch sonys below. Works pretty good although good ol Fred may tell me that wasnt a very "salty" solution! Cheers Fred, your a wealth. Oh and havent noticed my ST4000 making any unannounced course changes from interference. Rick Whiskey Chaser

Rick, me tooooooo.

I've used a pair of the Bose speakers for years. (since the 80s) Did the fader thing too. They are on their second set of mid range cones. The first died from weather. I plan to buy some polypropylene cones before summer and maybe just drive them from a cockpit radio instead of the home theater below. Maybe Sirrius (sp). The remote control for the home theater works from the cockpit but it's not water proof. I just haven't decided on a new setup yet. I've been reading these posts for ideas. Thanks for the nice comments Rick (and all). I really appreciate it.

Good minds think alike

Fred, Actually got a tear in my eye when I heard I came up with an idea worthy of use on your boat. ha ha I like the bose set up too. I have a remote for stereo but since its on the nav station wall I dont have line of sight from the cockpit. Mirrors maybe? :p Oh well cant have everything. Check my battery post if you have time. Im serious about that one. Happy holidays Rick

Cockpit speakers

Jeff, as you can see from the photo attached that on our 1991,H30 they are mounted into the aft lazarettes. They are out of the way and sound great. The holes cut into the lazarette are about 2.5"dia and sealed on the outside and inside. They run off the radio/CD/MP3 player at the nav/entertainment station. We have a separate switch for cockpit only speakers, cabin only speakers and both. Life doesn't get much better than Sailing and Buffetting. Rich

Cockpit speakers

Jeff, there is absolutely no affect on the compass nor the ST4000 autopilot. I am sure you will enjoy them as much as we do. Rich
