we spend millions making artificial reefs by sinking large vessels like aircraft carriers. Why not just sink it and let nature turn it into a beautiful reef?

Not 100% sure but isn't it possible that this salvage company has thought of using the air bags? Since they've been in business doing this long enough and have successfully completed many such projects....including ones where they did use the bags.... they must have thought of multiple approaches to this problem......

After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Navy had three Battleships, two Cruisers, and two Destroyers back in service within weeks. Five more Battleships, two Destroyers, a minelayer and a target ship were sunk. The Nevada was floating by February 42, The California was up in March 42, and the West Virginia was floating in June 42, and the minelayer Oglala was up by July 42, and all four ships were back in service before the end of the war and saw active duty.

During the same period they also refloated the Oklahoma, partially righted the Utah, and stripped components from the Arizona.

They have screwed around for over a year doing something our fathers and grandfathers could have done within a month or two....over 70 years ago. And my guess is that cruise ship has far less damage than some of those other old girls. Its getting painful to watch.

There's a couple thoughts in my mind that make the slow approach reasonable. Like todays cars I would think this boat has minimal metal involved and could crush easier than those old warships, and I hadn't read if any of the fuel has been removed. Secondly it is still an active crime scene and there could possibly be more evidence gathering. Lastly I would think there are still ongoing issues with lawsuits and insurers of the families lost in this tragedy. The rules are quite different today.

I would have guessed that a WWII battleship was bigger than the Costa Concordia - but I looked it up:

USS Oklahoma - Length 583ft Displacement 27,500 tons

Costa Concordia - Length 952ft Displacement 114,000 tons

Amazing how big these cruise ships have become.

there are more stringent laws now that are in place to help protect the reefs/environment, that get in the way of getting that thing off the reef and cleaning up the environment.
AND...there is a law that states, when its a matter of national security, all the rules and laws can be shoved aside so the government can have its way.... (not these exact words, but the intent and result is the same)

I thought something was missing in the plan, between the slide that says, "The plan is to rotate the ship upright, and onto an underwater platform." and the next slide that says,, "Then it will float up, leaving more of its structure above the surface."
