Just watched on the news the captain claiming he did nothing wrong. He also said he will command a ship again. This guy seems to reallly be full of himself. Doesn't seem too concerned about the people killed and missing. Hope they hang him from the highest yardarm. I guess they don't do that anymore.

concordia was a sailing ship that taught kids and went down off brazil a few years ago.
costa concordia is this cruise ship the cpt ran into an island.....i thought you were discussing the concordia, at first...THAT would be an interesting salvage.

Yer right zeehag. The Concordia was a tall ship out of Halifax. There was a documentary on it on a Canadian channel last year. Was interesting to learn that tall ships don't heel well. I can't remember for sure, but I think they said anything over 23 degrees and it will roll.

Attaching the cables that will right the ship to just the sponsons and not having them wrap around the entire ship seems risky to me.

could be fun to watch the clean up to see how they decide to do it, and if the ship will be re used.....

That is a pretty amazing plan. Good to see that they are working so hard to clean it up properly.

Looks like they will be cutting her up into scrap metal. Guess its cheaper to just build a new one.

"largest passenger wreck of all time" - I can't imagine how many more lives would have been lost if this happened a few more miles out to sea and the ship sank quickly.

Well, that big hunk of weight they plan to attach to its port side, I'm going LMAO if if it rolls right on over and sinks out of sight. Hope they have something to snub it.

They could have put air bags inside from the beginning, and simply floated it...months ago. Its like they are making a giant spectacle of it, though its not like the Italians aren't into spectacles. I didnt know they were building an underwater platform, seems like a giant waste of time and money, IMO.

Yea the momentum may be a problem as well. Seems like a pretty flaky plan.

They should make a Shipwreck Men episode out of this. That would be entertaining!
More seriously, the scrap value of the ship can't be worth what it will cost to raise it, transport it and cut it up. I think I saw $500 million with overruns likely. Is the ins. co. on the hook for the whole amount? What about the salvager? It can't be worth the risk.

Ya gotta hand it to the Costa Concordia Captain - suing to get his job back with back pay. This is the same guy who "tripped" and fell into a lifeboat before the passengers got off. He then "supervised" the evacuation from shore.

Why they're removing the ship was in the third paragraph.

"Because the Costa Concordia is in a nationally protected marine park and coral reef, it must be removed from the area before it can be dismantled, posing countless difficulties."

If the captain had run aground in the Florida Keys, he'd need to sue for back pay just to pay the fines he racked up.

Just to expound on what I said. If that ship rolls off that platform and sinks, its going to be the funniest thing anyone has ever seen. That people have been floating ships with air bags for 100 years or more, with great success, I just dont understand all the BS they are going through to get it out of there. This is the 21st Century, and its been over a year now and it hasnt moved an inch. If the area was so environmentally critical you would think someone would have stepped in and said they didnt have time for all this nonsense. I cant imagine it would have even taken a month to fill the ship with bags and float it.

Not 100% sure but isn't it possible that this salvage company has thought of using the air bags? Since they've been in business doing this long enough and have successfully completed many such projects....including ones where they did use the bags.... they must have thought of multiple approaches to this problem....

Not sure about the structural integrity of this ship but its possible that just putting the bags inside and inflating them would cause too much unintended stress on the hull and cause it to break up?

Its full of water and that's kinda like trying to surface a heavy-keel sailboat with air bags and having the deck tear off? Or maybe not ...

at least she is a steelie so many problems occurring with our fiberglass sailboats do not happen ....
