Lack of engine power

When running under engine power (M-25 diesel w/ Hurth transmission)on a very windy day, it seemed to be loosing power until finally it was necessary to tie up at a local dock under almost no power. Once at the dock on a calm day it was possible to motor forward and backwards using the slack in the lines. Engine revolutions were normal, the shaft was turning and the shift adjustment was as per the manual. Questions: (1) What is the most likely cause of the problem - propeller or transmission? (2) On this boat is there a pin and key to secure the propeller? Can the propeller slip? (3) Can the transmission slip under load? Is it common? How critical is the transmission level (I haven't checked it for some time - hard to get to)? Thanks,

Mother Nature

Mother Nature can exert a great deal of force against the hull with wind and current. Since the engine can only do so much work, it may be difficult to overcome natural forces. Sounds like you had good luck finding a dock to secure.

Possible transmission failure

Your tach indicates the engine RPM, not the prop RPM. The Hurth transmission can get glazed, slip, and not transfer power from the engine to the prop. This would give the symptoms that you are observing. You can check this out using a non-contact tachometer (borrow one from a mechanic). Steve Alchemist C-320

Steve's right

most likely the tranny. I had the same problem with mine, couldn't motor into a 12kt headwind. If you can see the shaft turn while the engine is running have someone goose the engine while in gear and you can see the shaft won't accelerate at the same speed as the engine. The correct question is #3. a possible reason is because while sailing with the engine off someone didn't put the gear shift in reverse. This causes glazing of the plates and you can tell by the tranny fluid color and smell.

Definitely check and maybe change the tranny

oil but if it looks good I'd also check your fuel filters. If they clog you lose power and rough seas can dislodge all the gunk from the bottom of the tank clogging them pretty fast first time you get bounced around some. After the boat sits for a while the crud all settles to the bottom of filters and it runs fine. Until you put it under a high load and/or rough seas again.

Probably the tranny

You might be able to save it by warming up the engine and sucking out the old fluid from the dip stick hole. Add fresh ATF and run it again. Keep doing this until you get clean fluid out. The best access on my 86 model is from the cockpit locker. Not easy, but changing the tranny is not either.

Hull

Have you checked to be sure the hull is clean? If covered with crud, the boat will act as you have stated...lots of rpm, appears to be normal, but no speed.
