funny you should post that. My wife got me that as a gift from WM a few years back and I installed it in the galley of my old boat. The thing was, it was shaped wrong and couldn't open a single bottle.

ALL of those brass accessories are just for looks, you know; they are not functional  Except for the cannons.

Not too many places on a boat you can pop the cap off.... unless you don't care about your wood trim or gel coat.
Winch handle. Always handy and no worry about a scratch.

I guess there are those poor souls that don't have sails or winches but they probably have a butler to open the bottles or at least an automatic, electric bottle cap remover.

I spent $7,000 on my old bottle opener...it took about 10 crowns to fix those teeth. Dumb ass kid.

Initially my wife was cheaper than that, but I'm still paying.

After a couple of PMs, here is a quick knife comparo:

Top to bottom, my favorite SAILING knives, with a focus on rescue..

IMG_0520.JPG

The Spyderco H1 SALT - Great knife -$90
Locking sheepfoot blade. One hand open. Serrated blade. Clip. Totally non-rusting blade.
On me whenever I'm on a boat.

Byrd Meadowlark - Almost great - $25
Locking sheepfoot blade. One hand open. Serrated blade. Clip.
My travel knife.

Wichard Safety knife - Good but crazy bulk -$80
Locking sheepfoot blade. One hand open. Serrated blade.
Lives in my PFD. No clip and too bulky for that anyway. World class locking marlinspke and shackle key. Has a 'magic' locking blade. You can tell a world class sailor by his/her ability to 'fold' a Wichard knife!

West Marine (made by SOG) sailing knife - $30
Sheepfoot blade. Serrated blade. Clip.
Has a great locking spike, crazy but the blade does not lock!

Victorinox Mariner- $40
The Swiss Army of sailing knifes
Locking blade. Serrated blade. Clip.
All the things you'd expect in a Swiss Arm knife.

The outlier:
Benchmade/Mel Perdue Griptilian Survival Knife $120
Locking droppoint blade. One hand open. Serrated blade. Clip.
NOT a sailing knife, because of the 'pig sticker' droppoint blade. But easily the best
knife I own. Anytime I'm in the outdoors that baby is with me.

:plus: Never leave home with out it.

And they are made only 45 miles away. Drop in every now and then to have them put an edge on the blade. They are great folk.

That's very cool. It is an awesome company. I like how you can always send in your knife back to them, and a tech will disassemble and clean it. and then send the blade to the sharp team for a new edge. Forever.

Just in case you want to get stabby...

I guy I worked with in the grinder room of a paper mill helped me make this 30 some years ago but I wouldn't want that one anywhere near a boat.

I have an old Australian clasp knife I traded for a watch about 27 years ago that I still carry when racing. It needs regular sharpening but it does have a spike and a bottle opener.
