Wienie,

I'd point out that knives with sharp points are designed to stab. As that is the last thing you'll ever want to do with a sailing knife, most reccomend a blade with a sheepfoot tip, which is unlikely to stab you (or anyone else near) while you are using it in an emergency.

Also, the emergency nature means the knife is best on you 100% of the time, which is why small, light folders are so popular for thus purpose.

Nice knife, and I agree for $20 even I could afford to lose it overboard. If only it had a blunt / sheepsfoot tip. Those pointy things scare me on a rolling boat (or under).
That Byrd knife I posted is 22 bucks on Amazon.

Some emergencies may require getting a little....stabby. It stays in the cabin most of the time, but is useful for fishing, cutting steak, or whatever.
I usually have a leatherman wave in my pockets whose serated blade can be opened and closed with one hand by feel...
I put this wichard in my pocket when racing on other people's boats.
It's not the best blade in the world but it's got a bottle opener... so there's that, which is nice.

That can be fixed in 10 minutes with a grinder. I've done that a few times to high quality kitchen cast-offs.

Yep, lock it into your vice snap the tip off, round the blade, drill a hole in the butt for your lanyard and you have your self a working rescue knife. Thinwater, kill your engine before you go to clearing your prop, prevents all that lanyard tangling stuff :)

Every comercial fisherman in this neck of the woods buys serrated victornox knives buy the case for cutting lines, they're only five bucks a piece, and can be round tipped upon request.

My pappy had a special skill for hooking crab trap floats. I think he just wanted to see his diver boy (me) jump into action and enhance the drama. His tool in the trade was a 12" serrated bread knife from the galley. It worked well.

This sounds like good idea. Very handy to keep several knives around in appropriate spots for quick use, like one taped to the liferaft canister.

But couldn't find any $5 Victorinox serrated. Have a link?

Thanks

We keep this baby in our galley. It's serrated blade locks. Not a true emergency knife, but handy to have on the boat. 40 bucks?

handy to have
You can see that it is a Mariner's knife. The compass points north where ever you direct the blade. Cool...

My wife OK'd this knife after she saw the locals using them on coconuts. The end is blunted but very sharp along the blade. $25.

I suppose the Admiral has learned not to trust you with anything pointed. A sailor-friend was looking for a rounded nose knife- like the kind you see in a steakhouse. He now has a full set.

what good is it if it doesn't have a bottle opener?
Looks like with that thing you can just cut the neck of the bottle off! But, I agree with Skipmac, any "sailor worth his salt" should able to open a bottle with almost anything - piece of cake. The really bad guys just twist it off - even if it is not a twist-off cap (or bite it off)!

Not too many places on a boat you can pop the cap off.... unless you don't care about your wood trim or gel coat.
