I'm looking for someone who knows sailing on Kentucky Lake reasonably well, to exchange a few emails with. Thinking of taking my boat down there for a week. Anyone? Tom

Cruised Kentucky Lake a number of times

We have a Hunter 31 now but back when we had a 26 foot trailerable we cruised Kentucky Lake several times, once for two weeks on our boat. We also chartered out of Kentucky Lake Sails (they rent Hunters). We have houseboated, canoed and sailed a Hobie Cat on Kentucky Lake in addition to renting cabins on the shore a number of times for family reunions. Why don't you drop me a line at rip@edmundson.com and I will try to answer any questions you have.

Chartered

Chartered there on my honeymoon and bought an O'day 322 there a year later. Lighthouse Landing used to charter larger boats but only have Colgate 26 now. Wonderful rental cabins and a nice facility and well sheltered. Green Turtle Bay Resort has a great facility on the Lake Barkley side with resturants and marine services. Lake is beatiful with seclude anchorages, but shallow in places. You may want to get a map/ chart from the Corp of Engineers. Let me know if you would want any futher info.

Cruised from Kentucky Dam to Pickwick Lake

several times. I docked my boat on the southern end for 5 or 6 years. Purchased my boats from Lighthouse House Landing on the North End. From the dam to Pickwick its 200 miles and it was a great trip each time. Let me know if I can assist.

Kentucky Lake

We have been sailing KY Lake for 15 or more years, chartering from Lighthouse Landing a/k/a Kentucky Lake Sails. When they discontinued charters other than daysailers, we boguht our own and now have a slip there, even though our boat is trailerable. We drive 5 hours to get there and it is worth it. IMHO, best time to sail is the off-season - less people, cooler weather and more wind. You definitely need a chart, and a depth gauge is most helpful when trying to manuveur some of the coves.

Cruising Kentucky Lake

Tom, Been sailing Kentucky Lake for the last three years. I agree with Deb about the off time and good charts. The main thing you have to watch out for is your depth. The water level can go from great to almost nonexisting in a short period of time especially this time of the year. We sail an H26 and when it gets too shallow we just lift the old centerboard up. We're planning to take a 2- 3 day trip next week. We're just going to shove off and see how far we can go. Kentucky Lake sailing

I have been sailing on the southern end of Kentucky Lake, where it runs into Tennessee, since January. We moved here from Georgia, a huge step up from our lake there. If you make it down this way, stick to the channel at any time other than summer pond. We had an O'Day that only drew 2'11, then sold it and got a boat that draws 4'8. We're stubbornly learning to stick to the channel. The lake also has distance races (50K, 25K) in spring and fall, out of the north end of the lake. I haven't gotten to participate yet. Oh, and look out for the barges, they ALWAYS have right of way. Email me at swartm@earthlink.net if you want to chat about the lake! -Mark Swart
