When I was a kid about a hundred years ago, we lived in Panama. My dad kept a Westerly Windrush at the Balboa Yatch Club. This is where I gained most of my sailing experience. Anyway the Balboa Yatch Club is located on the Pacific side of the ishmus, right on the canal channel. The boats are on moorings because there is just a exstream tide range. Needless to say when a ship would pass by the boats would rock and roll in their wakes. Once while my dad was changing the engine oil (volvo penta) he had drained the old oil out of the crankcase and had set the bucket of oil on one of the cockpit seats. Well you can see where I am going with this, a ship passed, we started to roll about and next thing my dad knew he was wearing a bucket of hot oil on his head. I had to go below I was laughing so hard. You know the kind where your stomach starts to ache. In the mean time my dad started to throw all his wrenchs over the side.

kinda related...but

when i was a kid, pops took me camping up in the high sierra and there was snow and ice on the ground.. he was walking with some coffee in his hand and he slipped on the ice.. i dunno, watchin his feet fly up in the air and him fallin on his butt just seemed hilarious at the time....(luckily he wasnt hurt, but i wasnt thinkin of that).. luckily for me i had a good natured dad, and later he laughed too....i know it doesnt have to do with sailing,,but hey, there was water present....

I was the "victim" in this one. I was adjusting my anchor line with my head and shoulders through the bow pulpit, when I heard a hissing noise that I couldn't identify. It wasn't a mystery for long since it was my inflatable life vest inflating (the pull toggle had caught on something). Once I extricated myself, it gave my wife and I a good laugh. In retrospect, it could have been dangerous and made me think that having this happen with your head upside down in the lazzerette could be a real problem and possibly even fatal.
