Tabernacle....
After reading all these comments....it is apparent that the much safer and saner stragegy would be to equip the boat with a tabernacle mast that would allow it to be tipped forward the required 20 degress using the halyards, stays and shrouds to control it. Instead of $175 per pass, I think the mast alteration is a better investment. There are a few larger sailboats here in Mission Bay that moor over at Sea World, beyond the 40 ft Mission Bay Drive bridge. I watched a single handing skipper tilt his mast forward about 30-45 degrees to easily clear the bridge. Pretty neat!

I think that we could get a PG-13 rating with a combination of football players, cheerleaders, yorkies, bowling balls and a dinghy using a tabernacle to lower a sailor's mast to fit under a bridge ... I think I've heard that if it stays up for more than 4 hours you should call your doctor ... Seriously, If a boat has to pass under a bridge on a regular basis, adding a tabernacle to the mast becomes viable. Doing it right requires a bit of engineering and considerable expense. Deck stepped masts are easier to convert than keel stepped masts. It would be much less expensive to cut the mast down and have a square top main built to get the sail area back. For a one or two time shot, heeling the boat makes the most sense ... particularly if it involves cheerleaders ...

Bridge Ducking
Let me just say that bridge ducking is not going to be a hobby. It was just a thought that if it was too rough on the outside, the ICW can be used....maybe? Hmmmmmmmmm? Anyway, I have a keel stepped main mast, so tilting the mast would not work, at least not without a hacksaw. The boat seems to heel fairly easily, but for those that have been gracious enough to do some calculations, here is what I got....An Allied Mistress 39 ' Ketch. Displ.= 20,800 lbs., Beam = 12', Mast Height = 49'-6", Not sure of the boom length, I'll guess at about 12 feet. I'll definately test out the dinghy idea first. Thanks for all of your help.
