I have a rope/wire jib halyard on my 1972 oday 22 that has seen its better days, do I need to stay with rope/wire or can I just go to all rope. All i am doing is cruising with it so i dont think this should be an issue but just want to make sure.

You can go to an all rope halyard, they make lines specifically for that application. You may have to change the sheave at the top of the mast if it is not big enough for the new line.

Since you sail on Watuppa Pond........ give Rudy a call at D&R Marine, he is "just up the street" from you and can set you up with a new, all-rope halyard and determine if you need to replace the sheaves.

All you need is 5/16" Sta-Set X for the halyard just as long as it fits through the sheave you're good to go. If it doesn't fit the sheave I would would change the sheave. Personally I don't like wire/rope for anything on a boat and I'd do away with it if I had it.

I bought two 5/16" halyards off Rudy a couple of years ago and did the eye splices for the head shackles myself. I also replaced the Jib halyard block on my mast which entailed having to cut a larger square hole in my mast to get it to fit. My mast has internal halyards.
