The self-furling jib on my Hunter 36 has jammed. I can see that the furling line is fully extended with no line wrapped around the block inside the furling box. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this problem? Thanks.

More re jammed self-furling jib

Further to my just posted email, as a result of the jam, I cannot furl the jib. I can manually wrap the jib around the forestay which winds the furling line so I can unfurl the jib. This is obviously no solution.

"I can manually wrap the jib around the forestay which winds the furling line so I can unfurl the jib. This is obviously no solution." If I'm reading this right, the issue is not a "jam." Rather, the furling line has somehow got reversed (probably when the sail was put on) - there should be no more than a wrap or two of line around the drum when the jib is fully furled. When you un-furl the sail, you use one of the sheets, not the furling line. That way, the furling line is spooled onto the drum as the sail is paid out. There should be no line on the drum when it's fully furled. When the sail is all the way out, the drum should be fully spooled, or "loaded" with furling line - pulling that (furling) line out is what wraps up the jib. Solution is simply to fully furl the sail and then "un-spool" the line, manually, without letting the sail out. Leave a wrap or two or three on the drum, no more. Apologies if I'm not understanding the problem.

the deion of the problem is not complete

jammed does not describe the situation well enough to help you, is it rolled up with no line on the drum or is it unrolled with no line on the drum or is it unrolled with all the line on the drum. you have to be specific. if the sail is rolled then the line should not be rolled on the drum. this would be a siuation where the sail was put on the foil when the line was rolled up. and so on. these are not complex machines. but it takes a good discription of the problem to offer help in resolving them.

Jay -

Can you deploy the jib, from the cockpit, using one of the sheets? If not, are you sure the furling line is not either cleated or caught somewhere in the run between the cockpit and the drum? Deploying the jib is what forces the furling line to wind onto the drum. "Taking it back" is what in turn wraps the sail up.
