I have recently purchased a 310. In attempting to equip this boat with a whisker pole I need to know the "J" dimension of the stock 135% Genoa. Dealer suggests a 13' pole. I don't know if this is long enough and I don't have the sail available to measure. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Whisker pole length

Just to be technical, I think the "J" dimension is a fixed dimension for a given boat. In the case of the C310 it is 11.9 ft. and doesn't change with sail size. It's more like a reference. I think the foot of my 135% must be at least 16 feet. The LP on my PHRF certificate is listed at 15.95. Now with that aside:) I think I'm using a Forespar twistlock adjustable 6-12 ft. (HD 6-12 DL). I consider it just barely adequate. It was left over from my 25' boat. It's now on the C310 with 135% headsail. BTW, racing rules generaly limit a spinnaker pole to the J dimension length. (I know a whisker pole is a different animal). What I would like is one a little longer and stronger, with line control, or anything besides twistlock. Maybe the LC 10-18 or LC 10-22. If you ever get a 150%, I think you'd want the latter. Good luck, I can't believe what they charge for these things.

You want the foot length of

the genoa, not the "J". I believe John's post mentioned that measurement. Ideally, your whisker pole should be the same length as the foot dimension of the headsail. Many sailors opt for the adjustable whisker pole to accommodate more than one sail size.
