You're just dying to have a blender onboard, but don't have a generator to power it, and we all know the 12v models don't work worth a darn. I have FOUND the answer: Turn your cordless drill into a blender! :) The more powerful your drill, the better it will work...ideally at least 1,000 rpm model (so, now you have the perfect excuse to upgrade your cordless drill). Drop by the paint department at Home Depot and pick up a paint mixer bit for it (they come in several sizes--from "paint can" to "5 gallon bucket")--for about $2..larger sizes are a little more. As for the "jar," any container that has lid you can drill a hole in to stick the shaft of the mixing bit through will work. Stick the mixer in the container (the mixing blades should be at the bottom, like a blender), add ice and drink ingredients, slide the lid on over the bit shaft. attach the drill and squeeze the trigger. Blend till smooth. Crushed ice will work better than ice cubes. The drill should be one that uses rechargeable batteries....buy several sets of spare batteries, so when one set runs down you can just pop in another set. And--I also recommend some practice at home to get the hang of this before trying it aboard! I got this idea when I saw a website from somebody who's developed a kit for $39 (You can see that at http://www.boatblender.com/ )...and THEN remembered someone telling me about a dockmate using his cordless drill to make mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving dinner on the dock...and thought, "why spend $39, when all you NEED is a $2 paint mixer bit and a round Rubbermaid juice jug? Try it...It works!! :)

FDA Approved

Peggy, I have friends in the food industry so I have been exposed a bit to some of the FDA regulations on food quality equipment. Food equipment is pretty much all stainless steel. Secondly you should at least warn your readers to not use the drill for other reasons. I can just see someone using a sanding disk on their anti fouling paint, or a screwdriver bit to remove screws from the head and hose clamps, then use it to make drinks???? No offense intended it just sounds really unsanitary. If anyone tries this make sure you clean the paint stirring bit to remove any oil or residue from the manufacturing process. At least the alcohol in the drinks might have some favorable effect on the critters growing all over the equipment. Multiple batteries??? How many margaritas did you plan to drink??? Now for the best Margarita recipe in the world....Get some margarita mix that you add a quart of tequila to in a bucket and pop it in the freezer. After some time it will be frozen. Use a heavy spoon to scoop it out into salt rimmed glasses. Float a little triple sec on the top. Drink up. I've used this freezer trick and the margaritas are excellent, and no crushed ice required!!! Dave

Dave, only the mixing bit goes in the drinks...

And paint mixers have very long shafts to reach the bottom of paint cans (mine is about 2' long). The drill only provides the motor. I kinda thought most folks are smart enough not to use the same bit to mix paint and make margaritas--at least not at the same time. :)

Hey, Peggie!

Why not just buy an inexpensive inverter? For forty or fifty dollars you can buy one large enough to power a REAL blender, and have REAL frozen Margarita's. Will also serve the purpose of operating other small 110V appliances.

Hey Mark :)

So you're saying spend $50 instead of $2? Will an inverter work on the beach? :) What if you make so many margaritas that you drain your boat's battery? However, for those who need an "industrial strength" blender that uses no electricity, there is this one: http://www.gasblender.com/

Well....

at least with the inverter you could recharge the battery on the cordless drill!<grin> and BTW, does a paint stirrer really make "slush" out of ice cubes?, cause if it ain't slush it ain't a "frozen" Margarita.

You call that a REAL margarita?!

Real margs aren't all frou-frou like that. They're served on the rocks! If I wanted a slushie, I woulda gone to 7-11. :) LaDonna

Why not get a inexpensive rechargeable Blender!

Black and Decker makes one that relatively inexpensive....(It can be purchased cheaper than that boat blender thing that still needs a cordless drill!!!.........) it's called the PartyMate I have it and it will make a slushy "margarita"...Plus the batteries are VersaPak recyclable batteries -- battery sticks recharge in their own base -- pop them in and go! They're interchangeable with other Black&Decker VersaPak-powered products. (cordless drills, cordless screwdrivers, etc)....so all you need to do is keep a few of these VersPak batteries charged and you can use them all over the boat (I love the handheld cordless screw driver...use it all the time) This site http://www.dmart2000.com/dm100.html has it on sale for $39 !! And alot of people at http://www.epinions.com seem to like it. Someone even said they got it at Sam's club for $30.....

Right on! LaDonna

And make sure you don't get the lime too close to the Tequila, it bruises easily... Anyway what's all this talk about Tequila and boats? I thought Tequila was for *BEACH* drinks and !RUM! was for boat drinks? Jim "Prospect"

Why spend $30 when you can spend $2? :)

Not to mention miss out on the fun of watching people's faces when you break out the drill to make drinks. Ah well...methinks there are more sailors who are really stinkpotters at heart--gotta have all the "right" electric gadgets, can't just be creative--than anyone wants to admit! I'm a stinkpotter, and I have a genset big enough power 6 blenders at once...but I think this idea is a hoot--I'd do it just for laughs. You're riight, Ladonna--margaritas should be served on the rocks...but there are still pina coladas, frozen daquiris and rumrunners (all proper rum drinks, you'll notice). We got into frozen dacquiris one summer...the strawberries and peaches were to die for that year, so I made gallons of dacquiri mix and kept it frozen in quarts. I brought 6 quarts to the lake for a long weekend with 10 boats rafted up in 90 degree heat, and we went through all 6 of 'em (4 blenderfuls to a quart of mix)--and a couple of gallons of rum--in one afternoon. When we ran out, the only thing we could find to make more was half a watermelon. Either it wasn't bad, or we just didn't care as long as it had enough rum it. :) A good thing we were there for the duration, 'cuz I don't' think ANYone was still on their feet by dinner time. But unfortunately I got carried away by my success with fresh fruit strawberry, peach, and (maybe) watermelon daquiris...and decided to try fresh fruit pina coladas. So I bought 2 pineapples and a coconut. The end result of THAT little experiment was some real gritty pureed pineapple and a blender with bent blades and a burned out motor! :)

Just for you, LaDonna...

My own private fresh fruit daquiri mix recipe: Use just about any fresh fruit (except coconuts!) you like: 1 pt sliced fresh fruit (no need to peel peaches, but do remove pits) 1/4 cup brandy (REAL brandy, not fruit flavored brandy) Juice of 1/2 a lime Sweeten to taste Puree till smooth For pina colada mix: 2 pineapples, peeled and cored 1 6-oz can Coco Lopez juice of half a lime 1/4 cup brandy Best to make your own mix ONLY when you can get fruit that's exceptionally full-flavored and juicy...'cuz how good the fruit is determines how good the mix will be. When you're making a lot, make only one batch at a time...that's all the blender can really cope with very well. Because of the brandy, it will keep in the fridge for 2-3 weeks. Can be frozen and kept for months. To make daquiris, combine 1 cup mix with 1 cup of rum, fill the blender with ice and blend till smooth. If you want to make strawberry-banana or peach-banana daquiris, just throw 2 very ripe bananas in the blender when you make the daquiris. If you want just a banana daquiri, don't make a mix ahead of time. It's just as easy to puree enough bananas (they should be VERY ripe, but not "over the hill" yet) to make a cupful, add the rest of the ingredients in the mix recipe...blend till smooth...add run and ice...blend again till smooth. And btw, you can also mix and match fruits--strawberry/peach is a very nice combination. Blueberry/peach tastes great, but it's a VERY unappetizing color.

Jimmy Buffett's Perfect Margarita Recipe...

Recipe is courtesy of my friend Frank, who recently purchase a new 340. If he's out there, thanks Frank, this recipe has helped me out many a weekend! I have dedicated some brain cells to this one! Undoubtedly, it's important to start with a week from hell. However, whatever his motivation is, I am certain that Jimmy Buffett has very few disastrous weeks. Now for the rest of us... Fill shaker with broken cubed ice. Squeeze two fresh lime wedges into shaker. Add 2oz. of Cuervo 1800. Add 1/2oz. of Cuervo White. Add 1-1/4oz. of Roses Lime Juice. Add 1/2oz. of Bols Triple Sec. Add splash of Bols Orange Curacao. Cover Shaker. Shake vigorously (the shaker, not your ass!) Rim outside of glass with lime peel. Salt outside of glass with kosher salt (who knew this to be a religious experience? I guess with enough of these you may see the face of God!) Add fresh ice to glass. Strain mixture over ice. Squeeze in one lime wedge, and toss rind over left shoulder. Let me know if you use the shot-glass for round two, and thereafter. By the time you get yours made everbody else will be in Margaritaville!
