It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere

I was down in Marathon last week. It was 82 & sunny on New Years Eve Day.

Took L'Attitude out; anchored in the lee of Pigeon Key (winds SE 10-15), dove on the boat (shorty wetsuit, water temp 74) and cleaned the bottom. Then we layed out in the warm Winter/Summer sun and got a little sunburned.
Fri, (New Years Eve day) it was also 82, till about 5PM when the cold front came thru. By Sat morning it was in the low 50's and blowing 20 from the N.
We left and came back to Va Beach.
This week the daytime temps in the Keys haven't gotten out of the 50's :cry: .... Timing (and luck ), are everything.

'Question regarding northerners moving to Florida after enduring 55 years of cold: Why does it seem the uniform for that migration consists wearing of plaid bemuda shorts, black over-the-calf dress socks, sandals and a wife beater t-shirt? Came thru the FL welcome center on I-75 last week and there must have been 5 or 6 retirees dressed that way. Always good for a laugh, but I know they must be glad to get out of that cold ' ...


Steve, it goes like this:

plaid bermuda shorts? the wife insists after you retire, you and her should dress alike...
black over the calf socks? he's retired, remember? Doc says to wear support hose...
sandals? isn't that what all floridians wear?!?
wife beater t-shirt? Florida's too hot for 2 shirts, and all the regular t-shirts are pit-stained...

I want to know why they move to florida, and then drive slow, make right turns with a left blinker, and think it's okay to not wear deoderant??????

I've never been able to understand why, but similar temps feel ALOT colder here.

It's the humidity. Makes it feel a lot hotter in the summer and colder in the winter. I'm a tropical, aquatic creature and anything below 80 is chilly, below 70 is cold. But I have been in other places that normally get cold and low humidty and 20 felt like 55 here.

The guy who bought a boat from me a few years back flew in from Alaska. He mentioned he was half Inuit (Eskimo). He wound up staying for a while and when our two weeks of winter came, he had two electric heaters and was wrapped up in an electric blanket, saying over an over, "I don't understand this. It's just 42 and I'm FREEZING."

It's 35 right now at Cypremort Point, LA and the humidity is 65%.

OH NO! NOT FLORIDA! NO WAY! I'D SOONER GIVE UP YOUR LEFT @#%& THEN MOVE TO FLORIDA! I'LL TAKE A MAINE WINTER ANY DAY TO 95 DEGREES AND 100 % HUMIDITY, FLAT, FEATURELESS, OVERCROWEDED, CRIME RIDDEN, COOKIE CUTTER FLORIDA. but, there is some nice scenery on the beaches.

Deal with it

You make the best of it and just deal with it and go on vacation as much as possible to warmer climates and move to warmer place as soon as you can and retire to Florida.
Lived and work in NY all my life and now am retired and living in Florida.

I live in Cleveland Ohio, have my whole life. We got 35" of snow this week. The temps are in the low 20's during the day. Here's the funny part: In the late summer and falWl we put on sweatshirts and sweaters. They don't come off till late Spring. We wear them whenever we are awake. When the temps go from 70 to say 60, we shiver a bit, then get used to it. The temps drop steadily for 3 months till now. I still only wear a sweatshirt (house temp is 60) i8nside and out. If I am going to be out a long time, I wear a coat. See, it's the reverse of the frog. Toss it in boiling water and it will hop out. Slowly get the water to a boil and it will cook!
The cool thing is we can ski in it, sledride on it, and shovel it!

Time to re-charge, repair and prepare

Yes, it's cold and snowy. Yes, it's bittersweet to have to haul the boat in October and await the thaw and prep for splash in April...or May.

But, with the boat decommissioned, it affords time to address items that became evident the previous season and prepare for the spring prep sessions.

On the list for this winter: the cabin sole has been pulled and with the floor grid exposed, finally the installation of the NorCold icebox converter can be completed (I've only had the unit for 3 years!). Pulling the sole allows the cooland lines and wiring to be run out-of-the-way and almost OEM.

Plus, A 3-switch 12v breaker panel will be added, one switch dedicated to the ice box, one to the new Raymarine autopiot that Santa dropped down the chimney and the 3rd...well, haven't figured that out just yet.

4 coats into the cabin sole process, of 10-coats, providing plenty of time to think about the coming season, which has to be paid for my February 15 :cry:. something comforting to have the house smell of Epifane, although Momma doesn't care for it.

So that's how the winter on the hard is made manageable. 80+ days until the harbors open again...which almost no one takes advantage of. Add 30 for a more reasonable number (110 sounds better than 4 months!).

10 deg here in upstate NY, been that way for over 3 weeks. Your body gets used to the cold and loosens up after a couple weeks of freezing temps. 50s would be tee shirt weather here right now. Any temps above 40 bring out the teenagers wearing shorts and sneakers. Boats on the trailer in the side yard under a tarp with two feet of snow and ice on top. "Winter" projects don't start til mid March. Winters up north make what little time we have sailing that much more enjoyable.
