It's cold outside

How do those of you who live in the northern climates deal with the cold all winter long. It was 15 degrees in the Dallas area last night. Going to be close to 10 tonight. Coldest it has been in 15 years. Water is frozen this morning, even though faucets were left dripping last night. My body has reacted by being stiff and not wanting to work as well as normal. At least for us here, temps are going to be back up in the mid 50's by next week. How do you deal with this when you know it's going to be like this every winter, your boats have to come out of the water, and you can't sail for a period of several months. Not to mention dealing with the snow and ice. I am sometimes amazed that anyone lives north of the Mason Dixon line. I guess you can just call me a wuss.

WUSS!

You get used to it. 22° outside right now. Inside working on the bedroom at 63°. Will go snoeshoing later today. That makes it feel nice and toasty outside. I would not enjoy living in an area that has little or no seasonal change.

I will likely always live 8-10 months in Maine and maybe 2-4 months either out west or the Caribbean. I have been to Florida a few times and it just is not for me.

I can see Canada from my house and it's pretty nice here in the PNW. People think our weather sucks because we are famous for our rain. That rain is falling mostly during the season when the rest of the Northerners are shovelling their driveway and their boats are on the hard.

Was at boat yesterday.. inside temp was 53 F, about the same as the water in the bayou. A small ceramic space heater was turned on just to make sure things don't get much colder..
Interesting, Bob.. I was in Friday Harbor on San Juan for Fourth of July a couple of years ago and it was about the same temperature as it is today !

True that...we wear the same warm coats all year round while sailing. Some people don't like that part. You don't see many bikinis-clad crew on moving boats. The water temp never moves far from 52 degrees. Here on Whidbey Island it is usually 7 - 10 degrees cooler than Seattle during the hot spells and 7 - 10 degrees warmer during the cold.

By the way Friday Harbor is a madhouse during the 4th of July, watch out for all those charter "skippers" in big boats.

I was skiing the Tuesday before last @ Loon Mountain and it was 12° with 50 mph gusts. Not sure what the wind chill bring it down to but I have to say it was cold! There were snow tornados as we rode the lift. I guess you just get used to it.

if my boat were SINKING, I'm not I could have climbed aboard this week! But in my defense:

I was in gatlinburg, Tn in November. Every morning it was 35-40 degrees, and I wore either 2 shirts, or a sweatshirt. It was 35 degrees yesterday here, and I had long johns, two shirts, a sweatshirt and jacket, and was still cold.

I've never been able to understand why, but similar temps feel ALOT colder here.

Okay, I'm going back to my blanket now.....

N&E, I'm just south of the Mason-Dixon line, and winter is a bummer here, too. We have 35 water bubblers in our condo developement's marina that start up whenever there is skim ice on the creek. We blow the water out of the shoreside water supply plumbing; blow out or fill our boat's water hoses with antifreeaze; Pump antifreeze throughout the raw water system. Most important, make sure the liquor cabinet has been moved back to the condo:dance:

It is colder in Dallas than in Bel Air, MD. When I was stationed in the Philipines it got down to 50 one night and we were walking around with blankets over our shoulders.

In Saint Louis it will hit 0 tonight. Doesn't take long to ice in the boat if the bubblier gives up. We take turns with several dock-mates running over to the lake checking on each others boats during the off season.

Last week we had nearly 2 ft of snow in the DC Metro area. It snowed again last night. Temps are in the low 20's -- and dropping. A winter person I ain't. My boat is up on the hard and hopefully adequately protected from the elements. While I don't care for winter, I usually do not mind the end of the sailing season here. In many ways, it is a nice respite and gives me time to do a number of other things that don't get done during the sailing season. I also appreciate sailing a lot more once spring rolls around and the boat goes back in. I've compared notes with a number of year-round sailors in warmer climes and it turns out we all spend about the same number of days on the water....

i thought i was chief wuss---lol---i complain in so cal about under 60 degree weather..LOL...but i DO know what cold weather is and at what degrees above/ below 0 farenheit to be politically correct in wearing fur ..LOL....stay warm and dry----we usually get the rain you are having as snow---we are going to greatly miss the water this year --- they were calling for rationing plans last yr and we had raain then--this yr we donot have any visible snow on th emountain tops to be seen from the beach---could be a very interesting year......

The diver that cleans my boats bottom here in sunny and (frigid) North Florida every 2 months cleaned it on Monday. Low was in the low 20's, high was in the mid 30's and the wind was blowing hard. Water temp is probably in the mid 50's. That is one tough dude. Question regarding northerners moving to Florida after enduring 55 years of cold: Why does it seem the uniform for that migration consists wearing of plaid bemuda shorts, black over-the-calf dress socks, sandals and a wife beater t-shirt? Came thru the FL welcome center on I-75 last week and there must have been 5 or 6 retirees dressed that way. Always good for a laugh, but I know they must be glad to get out of that cold.
