Captains Courageous (1937): Incredible schooner sailing and GREAT story Master & Commander: Far Side of the World: Wow, Patrick O'Brien novels were great, movie just as good Moby Dick: Terrible special effects, but great story makes up for it Mutiny on the Bounty (1963): easily the best version Lifeboat and of course, Captain Ron (has anyone been to Ted's Island?)

Movies

Wind, due mainly to the photography. The old version of Horatio Hornblower w/ Gregory Peck. I keep these on the boat to pop in the DVD player when I am puttering about. Also Master & Commander Pirates of Caribe I and II I am waiting for a movie version of Justin Scott's book "Leviathan" that will be a really great movie!

Master and Commander

Is bar far the most historically authentic sailing movie I've ever seen. Not to mention an incredible story and well acted and produced actiondrama film. I've seen it probably 20 times and have never been bored. There is only one flaw, the hacking of the lone remaining line tangled in the rigging that had gone overboard and acting as a sea anchor. A 400 ton ship in very rough weather, high winds and under sail being held back by a single frayed line? Otherwise a stunning show with great dialog and outstanding cinematography. Dead Calm runs second. More of an environment of sailing as a backdrop however beautiful yacht and good movie.

Great sailing movie that Brian and I found about a woman doing a solo circumnav in a sailboat who gets stuck in the DolDrums and starts going a little nutty. I think its Austrailian, mid to late 90's. Pretty good flick and has quite a bit of sailing.

I remember a movie from a long time ago

A movie about a fella sailing around the world and he picked up a hitch hiker, if you will. The guy he picked up changed the boats course because he was running from the law, and took it into a part of the ocean that had no wind for weeks. They caught a shark to eat and it bit the guy in the leg. At the end of the movie, the hitch hiker lost his leg. I can't, for the life of me, remember the name of that movie. I was probably 12yo at the time. I'm 50 now. Anybody know the name of that movie? Was it any good? Dan

Failure to Launch

It should be added to the list. It stared Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. While it is not a sailing movie and more of a chick flick, there were some really nice sailboats in it.

I remember the movie too Dan

Dan, The name of that old movie you were trying to think of was "The Voyage of the Yes". It was made in the early 70's and was a pretty good flick as I recall. I saw it when I was about 12 as well so, like so many movies of that time frame, we won't be ready for the bell bottoms and the helmet head hair. Seems like the guy loses his leg and the other guy goes on without him? I distinctly remember Simon and Garfunkel's El Condor Pasa playing when the one guy sails away in the end. Hope this helps. Amazon actually still has it! Check the link.

THAT'S IT Rumorhazit26!!

How did you remember the name of that movie? I can't believe I remembered it! I know I gave away the ending Stu, but that's about all I could remember. Sorry if I ruined it for you. It might still be worth watching. Along the same lines, has anyone seen the series on PBS not long ago called Set Your Sails? It was a weekly 30 minute show about the art of navigation on the water. That's what got me interested in sailing. I've been waiting to see it again. I sent an Email to PBS.org to see if it would air again and they acted like they've never heard of it. Anybody else watch it? Dan

White Squall

Capt. Ron and Wind are two awsome movies - they've been playing Wind a lot on the HD channels lately. But I don't think I saw anyone name White Squall yet - great flick too. Dead Calm is definately on my top list. Words for the wise: If you want to go cruising with your girlfriend one day and are trying to show her as much of the great life as you can, don't show her Capt. Ron, Dead Calm, White Squall, Master & Commander, The Bounty, or Pirates of the Caribbean. They'll get the idea that sailing is dangerous - rape, piracy, storms, sinking boats, stolen boats, lost at sea - I think Wind is the only girl friendly, safe sailing movie.

OK,nobody can dispute Capt Ron rules..my second would be Pirates Of The Carribean Black Pearl..then Summer Rental..White Squall and then Water World. Honestly though..given how many movies they make in a yaer..wish they'd do more with Sailing..promote the Sport and or Lifestyle.

Forget the Flicks

Ahoy all, I know!!! This is supposed to be a movie post. Forget the flicks for a few days and read Patrick O'brien. Master & Commander the movie was outstanding, however the books are marvelous. As for movies. M & C, Wind, and my buddy "Capt Ron". I'll bet the Big Leboski was a sailor at heart also since they sent his buddy out to sea with the wind.

Movie

Has no one else seen "Knife in the Water"? I have always been fasinated by the boat, the plot and the fact that Roman Polanski made the film while working under the government supervision of communist Poland. Just a typical weekend out on the lake. Older husband and beautiful younger wife invite a college student to share the outing on the boat. The two guys try to out-do each other. Guess who gets the girl?
