Daddy and daughter (4) going to get the boat out and wash the bottom off and get ready for winter.
Then it got kind of crazy.
The wind was only about 10 knots with little gusts from the North East. I had set my trailer beside the dock so I could just motor onto it and hop off.
Well the wind blew my boat too far to the South West so I backed up and went at it again from closer to the North. Same thing. I didn't compensate enough for the wind... Backed up again. All hell breaks loose. The twist grip on the tiller handle of the out board self destructed as I was advancing the throttle. I see black bits of plastic fall into the water as the motor decides to jump out of the water because it has too much throttle (3/4) and is not locked down to the transom... So I now can't control the speed of the engine and don't want to try to put it in N because that usually doesn't happen. It seems to always go into Forward coming from Reverse... And its jumping like crazy.
So I held the motor down as well as I could and backed further toward the North and hoped for the best. The silly kill button seems to have quit working all of a sudden... so I choked it to kill the motor.
How lucky is this! We drifted past the end of one dock and ended up right ware I wanted to be in the first place. Just kind of nose first apposed to along side. I hoped off the bow and directed the boat right onto the trailer like nothing had happened.
Squeaky didn't even know we were in any jeopardy of not getting to the right dock or anything. She was singing something to herself.. Kind of.. You know how they are at that age. Until I had the boat between the goal posts of the trailer. Then she wanted to help/do something. So I took the line I had and let her hold on to it tightly while I attached the bow strap.
I had planed to rebuild the carb and the impeller this winter but seem to have some more work now.
Here is a picture of the handle and one of the bottom with part power washed off and part not. The large white-ish area is ware the bunk of the trailer sat. (I didn't put anti fouling there on purpose. To see if the icky stuff actually didn't come off.)
Last one is dads little helper. Squeaky. (Today is her last Chemo treatment! After 2 years 3 mo. Hooray! She is doing Great!)

Launch ramps can be a great source of amusement to those patient enough to wait and watch.
Seems you have a great helper there with ol' (young) Squeaky. She is adorable and I hope she is a survivor.
That outboard does need a bit of work this winter, or replacement if Squeaky allows it!

Motors should always be clamped down hard to the transom. Good you didnt drop it overboard.

I know you have mentioned your lil girl before being on chemo, what did she have? She is quite a lil cutie, I sure miss when mine was that age.

Only thing I dislike about sailing is the outboard. Best wishes to Miss Squeaky, she's adorable!

She's adorable and I pray the health problems are over and that you enjoy many, many more pen worthy sailing mishaps with her, her friends, boy friends, children and grand children.

The little one is a doll. Glad she's doing well.

Sounds to me like you need to work on your reverse lock too. The engine should NOT be free to kick up like that in reverse.

Thanks for all the best wishes and all. Squeaky had type B-ALL Leukemia. Thank god it's just that type and we live ware we do. There is one of the worlds best hospitals just down the street. It's free too!
The out board has some problems. One is not locking in the down position. I think something is bent.... It hasn't been a problem as I go backwards very slowly so no kick up before. Once I get the sails up I would just reach over the transom and pull the OB up. Quick and easy. I think there is a latch that needs adjustment around the pivot point.

How far we've come from only a few decades ago. I wish her a long full life.

Get that motor fixed, you dont need those headaches.

Losing Outboards

Until today I had never heard of this, but we were having a race today and one of the boats was motoring down and their outboard fell off - as in lost on the bottom of the river. The board on the motor mount was rotten. Another guy in the yacht club was talking about a boat he crewed on in California (they took the motor off while racing [they were serious about racing] and put it back on to get back in. It fell off in a large swell as it was just slightly clamped on.

Happy to hear your daughter is doing well. We are big supporters of LLS here.

Sounds like your luck is just about fantastic. Squeeky enjoying sailing with her dad and on the way to recovery and able to enjoy many more. A busted handle, well no big deal. Congratulations.
