I have a yanmar 2GM20 and am having a lot of cavitation. Discovered this. I believe it is called a flexible coupling.

I need to find a replacement part.

Your help is appreciated!!

A little difficult to answer without a more complete shot showing your setup.

The only flexible coupling required usually consists of the hose which connects the packing gland to the shaft log. What you're showing doesn't reveal too much about itself.

Compared to the "garden variety" setup, I'd say you could do without the rubber connector and go with regular steel flanges. Mind you, both shafts have to be true before embarking down this road.

I don't see how this is related to the cavitation or is that a separate matter unrelated to the coupling ? I would think that cavitation at these low speeds would be most unusual.

Maybe you just mean vibration? Yes, it looks like a flex coupling. Looks like a crack in one of the metal flanges of the flex coupling. I have a Federal flexible coupling on my C27 as in this link:

Mine is similar in that it has a big rubber donut, so to speak, although it is constructed a little different.

When I bought my boat the engine was severely out of alignment with the prop shaft. I think the presence of this coupling compensated for this out of alignment condition on my boat and eliminated any potential damage.

You defintely need to replace that coupling as that is a nasty crack present.
But it will e a job, because you have to back out the prop shaft enough to get room to remove the coupling from the aft end of the trans connection-mount. You might want to wat & do this when the boat is out of the wayer. That way a mechanic can more easily verify that ther'e no problem with the shaft cutless bearing etc.

BTW your Catalina 38 is a rare bird indeed. They didn't make many of them. Your hull was bought by Catalina from another smaller boat builder who went out of business, but a fast hull form. I believe the interior looks just like a stretched out version of a C 30 but with a lot more elbow room. Cheers.
