Joe where are you with your correctness concepts? Its really all just meant as fun comments and not really much more. I will say though as an old military man I am not too keen on all this gay emphasis in todays society! I have a right to my opinion too, you know. Chief

I think all the posts were all about laughing at the ignorance & phobias of small-minded ignorant people. Some took a more serious approach in support. And, after reading the replies, I feel that the guys were just having fun with the topic & the colorful sail.
If you re-read the posts in order, you will see it was all in fun. Most of life is not fun. Humor is humor & in itself can also be a healer.
I remember when these colorful sails were the fad in the eighties. I thought they added some "splash," as there weren't many colorful boats back then. You mostly only saw blue, black, burgundy, brown & green hull striping against a white colored deck & hull. Aside of some sac strips, sails were only white. Nowadays, there are colorful deck & hull patterns.
I have always been fashion conscience in my clothing & I'm not gay.........ah, except on Thursdays.

You know, Chief, I could to try to help you understand "correctness concepts" and why this thread's theme is so offensive... if you cared...I'm hoping you will. What I can tell you is that this is a public forum, with many more participants than the few who find your "fun" entertaining.
I was a member of the same Navy as yourself.... it was common to poke fun at gays and lesbians, sometimes it was way more serious than a few jokes... it could be mean and vicious.... even deadly. Yes.... we were ignorant back then... not only did we not understand, we were vehemently opposed to even trying to understand, because we were afraid any type of consideration or compassion would "label" us with the same "affliction". and we certainly didn't want people to think we approved of homosexuality.. or god forbid... that we were gay too...
Fortunately.... times have changed...people are wiser... anti discrimination laws protect those who are "different" from the majority .... and... our society's integrity evolves.... yes... remember when women couldn't vote or own property, when schools were segregated, when children were exploited in the labor market. Why was it necessary to enact the Fair Housing Act, or the Truth in Lending laws, or to forbid banks from "redlining"????
Now, we have a set of standards on how we discuss or address people in public.... It is often called "political correctness" and because it evolves.. it can be confusing... But it is NOT a mandate to change the way a person thinks, or who they respect or don't respect.. that's personal and private.... no, it is only a guideline as to how we communicate publically with others....
By acknowledging this guideline, we no longer use slang or derogatory colloquialisms when publically referring, indirectly or directly, to others... and we know what those terms are because the list is compiled by the offended communities, not me.
That should answer your first question..... but, Chief, I'm not accusing anyone of being politically incorrect... no one has used any derogatory slang here... that's not my objection.
My objection is the presence of biased, prejudicial humor in our public forum.... knowing that myself and the majority of people here have gay and lesbian friends or family or both..... and that by bringing such talk here, no matter how harmless it seems to some, the integrity of this very forum is insulted..... a forum that is bound by the same set of standards that one might expect in the workplace, government, modern military or school.

I'm always surprised at the level of homophobic fear especially by males in our society. It's as if a man will switch orientation by the simple presence of a homosexual. (Notice how many have explicitly stated they were heterosexual.)
Having been around and known homosexual people for six decades, I have never had a threatening situation from them. On the other hand so-called "straights" have created several serious life threatening situations during that same time.

This was a thread that started out in good comedic fun. Hell, if we can't laugh at ourselves, then we can't laugh at others. I didn't feel the spirit of this thread invoked "Gay Bashing." It started out as a rainbow sail & after a bit some took it as offensive. I just don't get it. I have gay friends that "bust" on themselves. I bust on them all the time. That's just having a good sense of humor. I read the posts that thought it was offensive therein the "spirit" changed the course from what was originally intended.
The recent gay rights move has been in the media forefront lately & this is because there are a group of people that have been discriminated against, ridiculed, exposed, slandered & some have died, all because they were considered different and/or deviant.
Gee, if we change the word from "gay to Negro/Black, Red, Yellow or Brown," the reasons remain the same only the names change. As I recall, Blacks fighting for civil rights were in the media forefront for a time much the same as with today's Gays & Lesbians.
I can see where Chief might feel the media exposure is abit much lately, but as any other Hot Topic, the media will stay on top of it until the issue/s go away, soon to be followed by the next Hot issue.
If this thread offends anyone, it's a quick simple click to "unsubscribe". Let's face it, there are plenty more threads to chose from that won't offend.

Humor is subjective.
It seems to be only "non-gays" trying to be comedic at the expense of others.
Do you really think it is a situation of "laughing at ourselves"?
Respect for all people is important.
I don't feel humor has to be subjective, if not intended to offend.
The definition of subjective is, "based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions. But, simple humor doesn't have to based on any of these. It could be based on just getting a laugh, while not intending to hurt anyone's feelings.
I have an idea, why don't we take a pole & ask our gay friends to read this thread. Then, we post what their opinions are. This should put this to rest. I will post what my pal thinks.

this is one of those topic where i see money has not come it to play.... and i thought it was always about the money no matter what...i am glad to see no one has ridiculed anyone.....for being such...remember that all people have feelings and no one really wants to be spoken of in a negative light no matter what their affiliation

I've been reading this thread, laughed a bit, cringed a bit, and thought a whole lot. I'm willing to bet many others have too. And that's a good thing, right?
I am going to take Capn Ron's idea and show this thread to a gay friend of mine. I'm positive he won't have an issue with it but we'll see. But I think we have to remember that there's a lot of accumulated injustice and sensitivity here and not everyone can laugh about it as readily.
On the other hand we need to try and remember that while gays have gone through a lot over the years, there are millions of very solid, moral people who are having their core values challenged by this movement on a daily basis. You don't think that's painful? Modifying your core beliefs and having them challenged, particularly if they're faith-based, is TOUGH!
So lets give each other a little space to be human, laugh at ourselves and respect our differences. I know many of you have had a good chuckle at my expense with some of my dumber questions. Such as when Stu answers one by saying "Chapmans is your friend" OUCH!
