I have a Macgregor Venture 21. It has been setting in front of my house for about two weeks now (I live on the west side of Akron Ohio) as I get it ready to splash. Thursday night (the day before trash day) and around 10pm we get a knock on the door from woman who wanted to know if we were getting rid of the boat. I ask her if they were looking to buy a boat and as I looked out her husband was positioning the van to hook up to the boat (even though I have a hitch lock). The woman replied , no we just wanted to know if you were getting rid of your boat. Now I know I am going to get some on the board who will express your disdain for Macgregor sail boats, but I was seething mad and a little paranoid afterward that some one would take one of the only things in the world that I really don't mind working on (I hope all would agree that you would rather work on your boat than your everyday job, your job, your car, etc...). I actually had to hold my tongue to the sweet little lady who in collusion with her husband was ready to haul the only sailboat I own away. I would hope even as scrap I would be able to get something out of the boat as apposed to nothing. Now that I think about it, this was no lady, this was some sub-human sent to open up a can of shanty Irish American whup @$$ and she retreated back to her partner in dilllusional fantasy once she cracked it open and got a whif of my anger. Maybe I was being punked. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them?

What if...

You hadn't been home and hadn't had a lock on the trailer? Your picture didn't post, but still, the nerve of some people!

That absolutely sucks

Some people have more nerve than I can even imagine. I have run into some in my lifetime, but never anyone as blatant as this. To bad it isn't legal to just shoot some of them. Treasure your boat, enjoy your boat, and keep it locked. I would suggest keeping it with the tires off the trailer, but that would probably attract more bottom feeders.

NICE

Pat, Nice looking boat. Certainly doesn't look like trash to me, and wouldn't to anyone from this perspective. Maybe what you had was just a plain thief. If you hadn't come to the door, boat gone. I would have at least written down the plate #, for future reference.

WHAT!!!???

Nothing wrong with your boat. The only thing I can figure is that it was because it's parked on the street. Some people see something on the street and think it's free.

Unbelievable!

While I have never had this happen to me it doesnt suprise me that some would have the audasity to go so far as to back a vehicle up to your boat as if you were willing to give it away. I would suggest to take caution. As a police officer I have seen many scams and scemers try to feel the waters on what they would consider a prize. Keeping it locked is greate but may I suggest also finding a way to lock your tires as well. Sadley I grew up in a place where things liked to walk away from your own yard. I dont answer my door anymore without my badge and gun. What a world we live in but I guess that is why we love sailing so much. Sailing takes us back to simpler times. Good luck!

In Chicago

The Chicago garbage men will take anything that will squeeze onto the truck, however, this little fine boat, would not make it. By they way I lived in the North Hill area of Akron, when I attended Kent State. Back then, and perhaps today, Akron was underrated, just like old MacGregors are today.

A couple of points here...

...first, no your boat aint trash. There are folks that see things, they hope they are to be thrown out and take them. At least she asked. Of course with hubby backing up to it I wonder... No this is my real point. At least you had a hitch lock on it! And if they would have broke it off...at least you would be able to tell the police that you had a lock on it as well as your insurance company! Jack

Good thing you were home!

This is a sobering story! The NERVE of some people. My neighbor is a retired minister who made a nice bench so people can stop and look out over the lake that winds into his front property along the street. (We have alot of walkers on our street). Someone - TWICE - came and stole the bench. TWICE!!! He felt quite violated, especially since it was a nice gesture to offer a place to rest, but after the second theft he has it chained to a tree. There are some people that would steal anything if they could get away with it.

Put a sign on it...

"FOR SALE $41,000.00 NOT NEGOTIABLE". Maybe that would do it...but keep it locked anyway. Maybe a cable or chain through a wheel and around the frame, as well as the hitch. Hang on to that boat and enjoy your summer! :) -Paul

entitlment mentality

But Pat!!! They need the boat and you can provide it. It would be a simple thing for you to get another boat but they would not know how to. It is your duty to provide things other people want and can't get for themselves. just ask a democrat!!! I can't believe you can even sleep at night knowing that that poor couple does not have a boat and you, who can have any boat you want, do. You are clearly a heartless republican and not worthy to sail with any of us. Ever read "Atlas Shrugged?" Let me tell you brother there are more and more of those type out there and the longer we don't practice natural selection on them as a nation the worse it will get.

Where's Timo42 when you need him??

There's a chance for a great line here. I just can't think of one... I read this daily to learn from Maine Sail, Ross, Joe Shirley, Nice N Easy and others. Timo42- he just cracks me up. Pat, I wouldn't take it personally... anything too big to put in the trash gets put out on the curb. No matter how nice or crappy, it's gone post haste. And, maybe instead of a for sale sign, you can wrap it in police tape- then EVERYONE will watch it for you! I knew there was a line there ...

next time

The next time it happens, discretely watch, get a desc and license plate number to give to the police when you report a burglary in progress. You might also follow along in your car providing turn-by-turn direction to the police. Then, just sit back, smile and imagine how much fun your nice couple are having...

Well Don!!!!

You clearly don't want to see this poor couple have a boat and join us on the lake!!! Shame on you for being so selfish. Don't you have any feelings at all? These poor people NEED a boat. Pat can get a new one any time he wants but they can't so he must provide for them. From each according to their ability to each according to their need. This really frosts my cookies when I here this stuff. When I was in college (dinosaurs still roamed the earth) I thought that this could never happen in America. America was all about starting out equal with the right to get as unequal as you want. I've found over the years that it is more like "I need and you can provide so what is your problem with doing that for free" in more cases than I care to think about. Makes me want to go polish my gun before they go and breed.

...

That would almost be like someone taking a car from the side of the road saying they found it parked there and didnt think it belonged to anyone.

Bill

I'm hurt! I was only thinking about their welfare knowing they would likely get a free meal courtesy of the country Sheriff's office, their car (tow vehicle) would get all spiffed up in the impound yard and just think of all the nice folks they'd meet in those nice blue uniforms.

Had he touched your hitch

you could have pressed attempted robbery charges! Nice looking boat BTW. Sometimes these scammers engage in what looks like normal behaviour in case anyone intervenes. eg "Honey you go to the door and ring the bell, I'll hitch it up. If someone answers ask them if the boat is to give away. If no one answers but a neighbour intervenes, then we'll just say we're here to pick up the boat this fellow is getting rid of. If no one intervenes, we are new pirates... hurrah!"

Wish I was surprised

A friend of mine who strayed from the straight-and-narrow and wound up in law school passed on some wisdom from his studies: Anything worth buying is worth stealing. Unfortunately, he continues to accumulate evidence of the truth of that statement as a county prosecutor.
