Album cover art still available on iPod

Bill, Granted, it may be small, but most of the newer iPods will display album cover art. It may be too small to see the hand over Paul's head, or the fact that he's the only Beatle walking barefoot, but it is there! Playing backwards is another matter. I don't think we're there yet.

Actually, I know how to convert a <single> CD into an MP3 or other format. What is frustrating is the time to do it one CD at a time for 250 of them. What I was hoping to find is an interface that would permit me to hook up my 300 CD player to my computer and just let it run to upload the whole collection unattended. So... more thoughts? Rick D.

set up itunes

Rick, You can set up itunes so that it helps a little in making the process easier. You can make it automatically rip the cd to mp3 when you put a new cd in the drive and then automatically open the drive when finished. That speeds up the process a bit. All you have to do is wait for the beep at the end of the process and put the next one in, without really having to touch the keyboard the whole time. There are also some services you can send your collection to and they will do it for you for a price.

More Ipod

If you have a stereo with a tape drive, you can buy an adaptor from any electronics store for about $10. Ipod plugs into adaptor and adaptor goes into tape slot. I use rechargable AAA batteries that last about 8-10 hours each.

Victrola also

Glenn - I had to laugh when I saw your post. Two summers ago, while sailing along the Michigan coast, we stopped in at Pentwater. While there, I was in an antique shop and found a full console upright Victrola. I've had an interest in them and the price was right, so I asked the Admiral. Her response? "If you can get it to fit, that's fine, but I really don't think it will make it through the companionway." Antique dealer hands me a tape measure - quick measure the console, run to the boat, quick measurements there, it's going to fit, but it will be tight. Looks like we'll have to store it in the v-berth. Hmm, where are we going to sleep (we're cruising with our 4 kids). Back to the dealer, "We'll take it!". He helps me wrap it in plastic to protect it, loads it in the back of his pickup, and then gives me a lift to the marina. A couple more ports in Michigan and then off across the lake back to the home port of Racine. We ran into some 4 to 6 foot waves, had great wind, water over the bow, and some nervous moments that I hadn't secured it well enough up front. But the folks on the dock got quite a kick when we got in, took it out, unwrapped it, cranked it up, and played scratchy 78's for them. T J

Circuit city...

has a service that will digitize your CD's to MP3's. Not cheap but at about 20 minutes a disc it will save you about 80 hours of work.

More tips...

Many have complained about speed when ripping CD's this may help. In iTunes: Select "Edit" (Top left of screen) Then "Preferences" (at the bottom of the drop down under Edit) Then "Advanced" (from the top tabs) Then "Importing" (from the tabs labeled General, Importing, Burning) From the drop down next to "Setting:" Select (Higher Quality 192 kbps) Then Un-Check the box next to "Use error correction when importing CD's" By doing this you have elected a higher quality rip that will sound significantly better than the default which is 128 kbps. It is very difficult, if not impossible to tell the difference between 192kbps and a CD on a car stereo. On my home stereo I can tell but in the car 192kbps is not a noticable difference 128 kbps is however a notable quality difference between CD and iPod. By unchecking the box that says use error correction when importing CD's you on-line will increase the spead of the rip because the software is not having to scan the CD and then check it again to confirm the info is correct. If you have a CD that is very scratched you may want to turn error scanning back on but I've ripped over 600 CD's and only once had to do this. My average rip time on my computer is under two minutes (2.53ghz Pentium 4 with 1G ram) but sometimes some CD's do take a little longer. Advice about purchased, on-line, downloaded music like iTunes songs: All downloaded music is "encrypted" (encrypted = bad) which means you can only share it with say four or five computers or burn it to a CD four or five times. I like to make mixed CD's for friends and learned the hard way that a song I bough and paid for I did not own like I do when I buy a CD! To circumvent this problem I now keep a seperate folder named "downloaded music" where I choose, in iTunes, to place my on-line purchased music. When I buy a song it automatically goes into this "downloaded music" folder and stays seperate from the rest of my collection so I can't forget which songs are encrypted and which ones I actually own. Once I get enough songs in the "downloaded music" folder I make a music CD of the music in this folder, not an MP3 CD but a music CD that will play in any CD player. I then re-import or rip these songs back into my computer just like any other CD as 192kbps MP3's and va-voom the encryption is gone and I now finally OWN my music. To tell the truth because of the hassle of re-ripping my purchased music I usually just buy the CD instead. iTunes and the other on-line music retailers don't like to tell you about their dirty little secret. That you are actually only "renting" the songs so you would be forced to buy it again to make that X-Mas CD for Mom.... Opinion on FM Modulators, transmitter and tape deck adapters: Notice I said opinion above and not advice. The reason my post does not include these items as a reasonable way to play your iPod through your stereo is because they generally sound like..... crap! Yes they work but not very well. The tape adapter is the best quality, if you turn Dolby B noise reduction on, then a hard wired FM modulator would be second but the hassle is more of a pain in the ass than it's worth and finally the FM transmitter. FM transmitters generally suck. No I take that back the DO suck! Beleive me I have ordered, and sent back, six different FM transmitters and NONE sound nearly as good as a hard wired FM modulator or AM radio for that matter. If you can stand your prized music collection sounding like it's on AM radion than go ahead and buy an FM modulator it's easy and relatively cheap $40.00. I for one like a clean, crisp sound and if you've spent the time and money on everything else another $79.88 at Wal*Mart for a AUX input stereo is not going to kill you. I know I mentioned rear AUX input, as a very nice feature, but this Sony at Wal*Mart has a front AUX input for only $79.88. If you could find a right-angle headphone adapter the cable would not stick out the front of the stereo saying "break me off will ya".. http://walmart.scosche-cars.com/products2/?sfID1=24&productID=1882&walmartProductID=5148257

So you guys handle volume from the cockpit

by setting the radio on and turning up the volume. I guess that would work but not perfect. You still have to go down and turn the Radio. I have one of those "jensen" marine radios and its a Hardwired Remote (never any deadspots) and I got to tell you one of the best things I have on the boat is the remote control right at the helm for the stereo. If its gets to loud or too soft or I need to turn it off at the helm to hear someone I can do it without leaving the helm. If I want to change the radio station I can do that too. With the iPod remote I know you can't change radio stations or turn on the radio, but do you get any deadzones where the RF Remote isn't picking up the signal? ps. Sidebar: Wonder if Apple is going to be able to keep the name iPhone . They seem to be good at lawsuits and dragging things out but they don't own that name.

No dead spots!

It is true that I can't turn my stereo on or off but I can turn the iPod on and off from the cockpit essentially doing the same thing. With no input signal from the iPod to the AUX input the stereo is just in a stand-by mode waiting for a signal. One thing I can do that you can't is put my remote in my pocket, while paintng my bottom, at the boat yard in the spring, and control my music from underneath the boat or anywhere within about 60 feet. I can switch songs, change volume or turn off the iPod from anywhere within 60 feet. Sometimes on the mooring I change songs from the dinghy while cleaning the water line in-water. Wired stereo remotes are nice but unless you have a stereo with a wired remote and iPod interface (very rare) you still need an ABT iJet remote control for the iPod.
