INavX. I don't use it as my primary nav aid, but if all else fails it could serve as a backup. It works well for planning routes. It does not meet your criteria of being free.

Inavx on iPad here too. Added an external gps and AIS antenna through a Digital Yachts wireless device. The 12 channel gps antenna greatly improves the accuracy

Easy to use, not free, but really not very expensive.

Navionics

Great back-up for my GPS, with seamless marina phoning on my iPhone.

My iPad does not have the GPS function, but the Navionics charts are really good on the iPad. I have the US/Canada Great Lakes package for regular use, and The Australia/Pacific package to plan the coming trip to Bay of Islands in New Zealand.

I don't use any for navigation but will use them for route planning and a back up to my plotter. I don't use anything for navigation except paper. I use nav aids on the iPad for marina info and the like.

Under $10 apps I like eseachart for its votive captain interface. I believe that included maps. (iNavx does his too). ISailor was free if memory serves and you buy maps. This app is good for planning.

If I can ever bring myself to spend $50 for an app I would buy iNavx. It looks great and review good. I. Just cheap and while I'll gamble $5 on an app to be what I want $50 is too much. I wish Apple had a policy giving you a few minutes (once) to try an app like he Android market had before I changed platforms.

It's on my list but I'm not a big gambler. SC

iSailor and $9.99 for PNW Chart works great for me. I purchased the Bad Elf external GPS, ($99) for the Ipad and now I have Anchor Alarm as well as Navigation back-up to my Ray Marine system.

I use Navionics express. Just completed the trip from new York to Florida and it was great as a backup and fantastic for planning ahead. Locating overnight spots with contact info made it easy. On the ocean at might was also very good. Of course it was secondary but a big plus.

I use iSailgps on my iPad. I think it cost about $5 in the app store, and you can download NOAA charts for free.

Works reasonably well for my limited use.

I am attaching a screen shot of one of my day sails this summer. You can see our track (pink line). Where the line is broken, I turned off the nav software to take some photos and movies with the iPad.

I do find reading the iPad difficult in the bright sunlight however.

I have Navionics on my phone and Ipad. I think the ipad version was $24.99 at the time I bought it. Works very well and seems very accurate (I have the 3g ipad which helps). The charts are free, you just download the areas you want. Although it takes a while to do that it's nice because your not using a lot of memory for charts you don't need.

Fine under a Bimini but tough in bright sunlight. Glare reducing screen protectors help but not fix the direct sun issue.

I've pondered trying a Nook Color as well running an OS off the SD card. I suspect it will be the same. SC

Sailcruiser's right, it is okay under a bimini, but bright sunlight it is real tough. The nice thing is you could step into the companionway with it for a minute to get out of the light if needed.

Sailor, the iPad wifi doesn't have a GPS chip. You will need to purchase an external one for any navigation needs. There are several bad elf, dual xgps150 which is Bluetooth connected rather than plugged in. From there no I can't think of anything free but there are a few decent under $10 mentioned in the thread. Sorry sailcruiser but the iPad does have an internal gps in it. It is a two channel receiver so it's accuracy is somewhat less than the traditional marine antenna which is a 12 channel receiver.
I have used the internal gps on my pad as well as the external antenna and they both work fine although in close quarters the accuracy of the 12 channel external is superior.

From Digital Yachts I bought a gps antenna and a AIS antenna and coupled them to the Digital Yacht dual channel wi fi unit so that they wirelessly connect and send NMEA data feed to the iPad. Use inavx navigation software and charts.

Very happy with the performance.

Do you have the G3 version of the IPad? According to the technical specifications from Apple, only the G3 version has A-GPS. Apparently, the GPS receiver is part of the G3 chipset on those machines. A rather long and lively discussion on this can be found over at the Apple Support Forum.

Cheers,
Brad
