I would like to install an inverter to operate my LCD TV. What type is OK? The sine wave is very expensive and will run anything, but will the modified sine wave unit work with this type of TV?

Inverters

Hi Bill - Since you're considering an inverter, think about what other uses you night use an inverter for. You'll need to consider the size of your battery bank as well. Inverters have come a long way in recent years. LCD TVs can have problems with modified sine wave inverters, but it depends on a number of factors (size of screen for one). Although Xantrex is the largest, I'd consider looking into Magnum Energy's offerings (both modified and true sine). They make combis (charger with the inverter) only though, so if you only need a smaller inverter, check with Victron Energy in addition to Outback and Xantrex. More info on your current setup and requirements would help, but hopefully this gets you looking at some options. Best, Trevor

Bill If you are comfortable with your current charger, a separate inverter is a good choice. Just be sure when you install it that you have a switch that can Only allow EITHER shorepower OR inverter power to be on at one time. If you do it yourself look for a Blue Seas 8032 (or 8132) switch (the parts numbers are the same model, just different amperages). If you don't like your current OEM charger consider a combination inverter charger. You avoid having to install the switch ($150), get automatic switchover from shorepower, and a much larger charger. Do the $-math on the different approaches. Trevor's right, too, about a BIG house bank. For even basics, if you have a TV, you'd better have a 400 ah house bank and a separate start battery. Converting DC back to AC eats amps like you wouldn't believe. *o All the best, you have a great boat. Stu

12volt RCA

I have a RCA DVD 12 volt and it works great It dosent suck up power like the tube type ,and they sell a great mount that swings out of the way when the set is not in use.It came from target .com most LCD screens are 12 volt and get converted to A/C the guys at radio shack tell me that with the right plug they will work on 12 volt battrey power as long as you dont charge or start the moter.
