my Verizon/droid hot spot works my laptop extremely well. One advantage to this setup is you can start and stop the extra 20$/mo. option when ever you need to by calling the provider. Also as a side note- the Navionics mobile chart plot app is probably the deal of the century! Very handy as a back up or to just plan and day dream about your next trip.

Too bad that there is a great disparity in rural networks compared to high-population areas. What works great in one area will suck in another. I get the strongest signal at my boat via Verizon. But, it is very narrow band. In Chicago, I have no trouble streaming Netflix. In Rogersville, AL, I have trouble streaming audio. It would be nice if when Verizon upgrades a 3G cell tower in an metropolitan area with 4G equipment that they would take the old 3G equipment and replace the antique equipment out in the boondocks somewhere.

We use sprint also with HTC evo which supplies a password protected wi-fi for up to 8 pc's with unlimited data. So far it works great. I do believe you need to be in range of a cell tower. Not sure though.
