Good morning fellow Mac owners. I have a 1982 Mac 25 that's in good shape, and I'm contemplating redoing the interior completely. Have any of you taken this on with your boat, and would you be willing to share your ideas? Thanks. Marty

His looks like Martha Stewart lives there,

while mine looks like my old frat house. I'd like to know where all the clutter went, PFD's, Extra sails, Jackets, fishing gear, ice chest, towels hand bags etc. There doesn't seem to be any place to store stuff. Thanks all in advance.

There is so much that can be done! First I guess you have to decide how you want to use the boat. I only over night with 2 people max. so have been thinking about cutting into the vee berth so as to enlarge the area for the head, and increase my storage space. Now I have 3 Vn 23's, so this is my idea for just one of them. I will start by fitting the floatation foam all up into the bow. Then maybe adding a little. Then putting a bulkhead up where it comes to. Then leaving at least 12" between the hull and my cut, cut the vee berth, upto 12" from the new bulkhead, to open it up. Then adding a floor and shelves under the shelf made out of the old vee berth. Others that actually have the vee berth for sleeping have added an extension, so that the vee berth is longer. On some the extension lifts, for access to the head, on others they move the head to the floor infront of where it normally sets, and add storage where the head was. Some have opened up the bulk head between the settee and head to give the boat a roomier feel. Most have removed the original galley. Some have made a roll out galley that slides back into the very small area that is the quarter berth. I guess the best idea is to make mock ups of your projects, sail with them in place and see if they will help or are just in the way. It's better to throw out a cardboard galley that would have been too big, or small, or useless, than to spend the time and money building a project that won't do what you want it to do.

Send me your email

I have made some changes that you may want to see. The best mod I have made is to install a below deck gas tank, 9 gal. I have modified the galley with ice chest under. I added storage behind the dinette and added and modified bulkhead at the cockpit to mount storage for dishes.

Interior Make Over

When I got my 82 Mac in Dec 2004 I found the condition of the original bulkheads in very poor shape. I removed all and using the old pieces as templates cut new ones from 3/8" Baltic Birch plywood and coated them with a clear polyurethane finish. The lighter blond color really lightens up the cabin. I also replace the compression post with a piece of mahogany that I had. The side pieces covering the liner/hull connection were sanded and an oil finish applied. Someday I'll replace the carpet covering the cabin top. Had to cut some pieces out when I reseated some of the deck hardware that was letting in rain water. -- Rusty

What about the weight?

I'm all for making my boat nicer. How much weight does this add? It looks great and my wife might actually go into the cabin if it looked like this, but it seems that this would have to add a fair amount of weight, especially if it is built solid enough to hold up. Plus, I am a pack rat by nature. Give me a space to store stuff and I'll find stuff to store. Has anyone figured the weight against sailing performance or trailering? If it doesn't adversely affect anything I might try it with mine. -John

Head Liner

tpolo, What did you do to your head liner? It looks like some kind of wood treatment. Can you post a picture and some details? Thanks -- Rusty

Great looking rehabs!

I'm definately taking notes for mine! Bob, Is that new blue mouse fur, old stuff colored, or just removed and painted? Jerry

oh, and....

One more thing.....my wife/first mate points out that after we applied the Jet Glo, she took some flat white enamel and sponge painted some white highlights on the blue. Kind of a sky with wispy clouds look. credit where credit is due. Bob

Mouse fur

Bob, What I've heard called mouse fur is a soft fuzzy fabric-like material that is sometimes used as a headliner as well as other things. I have no idea what it really is but what ever it is and however it's applied, it forms itself to whatever it's used on very well. I don't know what is normally on the interior upper portion of the cabin in the 25s. Mine was removed and painting started. I just assumed that maybe it was "mouse fur" since it is used on other boats. What WAS the original roof coating? The textured, velvet appearance of your paint job looked like it might be some sort of fabric fuzzy covering. VERY appealing! Mine is just a gloss white now and needs another coat or two. After seeing your paint job, I'm going to have to try that! Great job! Jerry Decide to google mouse fur. There's some references to it's use but no explanation. This link has a picture, about 3/4 of the way down the page, of it being used on a car door. http://cars.about.com/od/suzuki/fr/ajf_06verona.htm

coating

Jerry, the original coating was, I believe, just a thicker type paint. As I said, after the exposure and time that mine went through, it was hard to tell just what it may have looked like originally but it appeared to be a smooth finish black/grey mottled color. It peeled off with the power washer readily and underneath was the the white finish coat over the fiberglas (gel coat?). After I applied the blue color, my First mate stated that the look was that of the bottom of a swimming pool and she had to do something to tame it! Thus the white sponge painting thing. Have to admit (and I HATE IT when that happens!) ....she was right and the highlights really helped soften things. best of luck on your boat! Be sure to put some pics of it up on this forum....I am always blown away at the quality and different ideas that come up here. Mac owners are a dedicated bunch to be sure! Bob

Three cheers for the first mate!

The spong painting is definately what makes your paint job look so good, Bob! I had to show my wife and she loves it too. So now she has a job! All of the wood work looks great in the boats that have it but I just don't have time to do that! I'd rather be sailing! Jerry Finally found an appropriate avatar. This is the boat I learned to sail on.
