All by yourself?

If one is planning to solo about, then I would give stronger consideration to what size vessel can I singlehandly sail comfortably. NautiDuck (Randy) has a good suggestion.

After you learn on a smaller boat

you can move up to one of these or if you know how to handle a large boat already than learn on this cause this is both a sail and motor yacht very well built and a blue water boat with lots of room.

David, try ussailing.com

There are other online sailing education sites, as well. This is just one that I found quickly. Good luck with your dreams/plans.

Lake Cats?

Another consideration is that I’m not sure you can get a cat delivered to most lakes. I’ve seen wide loads, but a 25 wide boat going down the road would take a bunch of coordination, planning, and be very expensive. I love the idea, but have always questioned how you would get it there. Also, you would need to be a wide lake or you would be tacking all the time because they sail along pretty fast.

Get Real

Let me get this right. A man has somewhere between 1/4 to 1/2 million dollars to spend an a used boat. His problem....dont know if he wants to cross oceans or sail it on a lake. Instead of walking the docks and talking to live aboards and travelers on boats in his size and price range, he comes here? This cant be for real.

Lake Cats

Many Cats and Tris fold up - or can be disassembled for transport. There is a good sized tri at Lake Dillon in the mountians here - it did not get there by sailing its way up to 9017'. ;) The particular design needs to be checked as to its specifics to see how trailerable it is. Liveaboard size is more likely to be a problem - depending upon how much space one needs.

what to do

Well my 2 cents worth is this. As for me sailing in a lake just doesn't hold any interest for me. I want to have the option to travel if I want. Second it was mentioned and I agree you need to get something you can handle yourself, agree 37 or 38' is about max. And I'd buy the size I wanted out of the shoot. Its hard to sell used boats. You'll loose money on it most likely. do alot of looking, find one that fits your price range, has a good hull design, you don't want something that sails like a barge and has a nice interior. If your planning on spending this much you have a lot to choose from. Jump in and enjoy it, life is to short.. Also was mentioned to check out as many marinas as possible and talk to owners. I think thats your best source of info..
