Installing hardware OVER kiwi grip non skid?

Hello, I'm interested in just covering my existing (well worn shallow) nonskid embossed non skid deck with kiwi grip. I was wondering if the reinstalled hardware over the kiwi grip would compromise a tight seal for the hardware being its such a rough texture.

Has anyone ever installed hardware OVER kiwi grip and have had water tight results?

I really just dislike the light blue color of the current deck. I'd like to use interdeck or ez deck or similar if kiwi grip doesn't work well, but I'm nervous about how the particle non skid feels on clothes or skin when applied to the cockpit benches without sitting on a cushion. Anyone ever use interdeck or similar premixed nonskid paint for cockpit benches? Thanks

I plan on applying Kiwi grip in the next few weeks. I was going to mark around where my hardware will be and tape off those areas. You don't want that rough surface under your hardware. You could paint and then sand the area smooth too. Btw, no one says you have to use the rough Kiwi applicator on all surfaces. I am going to use Kiwi grip on my sitting area but apply with a foam roller. It's that course roller that Kiwi has that actually makes that rough surface.

Or just use butyl tape, double thickness. I used the double thick trick for rebedding my main saloon hatch. Even though it was on flat fiberglass, it needed two strips to seal it.

I had no problems with several items over kiwi.

I suggest you give it plenty of time to cure, several extra days beyond the normal cure. That way your sealer wont eat into the paint and peal the paint when you redo the seals down the road. Depending on how rough you texture the kiwi, you can sand it down under the fittings for a smoother surface. I did not need to do that. Most of my seals were with Mainesails butyl tape but I also used lifeseal caulk in a few places.

He is talking about hardware. I want my hardware held firmly against the fiberglass on a flat smooth surface and not sitting on top a bunch of rubbery peaks filled with butyl tape. I will use butyl tape but just around the screws using MS's cone/c'sink method.

Ahh ha! I will most likely paint where the hardware mates with the deck, then mask and kiwi around the hardware. Still on the fence though. Might just go ahead and paint ezdeck or interdeck throughout the non skid areas. Although I like the idea of kiwi.

As long as my hardware is removed, I just prefer to take the extra minute and mark my hardware and paint around it is all. Your boat, your choice.

I've used nterdeck for years o my boats. Rough enough for a good grip, but not so bad it'll injure you if you fall on it.I use a small foam roller- one of the 4 inch ones

I used butyl tape about 4 years ago on my hunter 25. Where I had HW to reinstall there have been no issues with ANY water intrusion. The nice thing about the butyl tape is as the hull flexes and moves beneath the HW there is just enough give to allow the HW to stay firm. I actually think it has helped to reduce some of the spider cracks since I don't have two differing inflexible items beating against each other.

Have fun either way.
