Still looking 26 to 30ish In my mind, for now
I'm looking at a P26 OD in the water and pulling it would be difficult and expensive where I live. Two questions on the 2 biggest problem areas.

1. A previous owner converted it from tiller to wheel. I've read of the potential problems with rudder bearings but am not sure how to test wheel steering for this problem, since my previous boat was tiller. How could you feel any play in rudder since wheel does not provide same feedback as tiller. Here is schematic of how it's installed:

(If I buy, I will try to convert back to tiller.)

2. Other than inspecting the bolts, is there any inspection or test for the keel while its in the water?

(I'm familiar with and have read Dan Pfeiffer's website so no need to point me there). Many thanks for any input.

Re: Inspecting rudder bearing on wheel and keel bolts in wat

Call Edson and ask them and questions you may have. However if you go below deck and inspect the rudder from there.... I am not sure about the set-up of this boat but you should be able to assess the situation from there. Regarding the keel bolts, is there water in the bilge and what condition do the bolts appear to be in.... If it is a consern I would dry the bilge and take it for a sail watching the bolts and see if there is any motion.... or water flow in through the bolts.

Sure others will have some more intellegent answers

answered you on the other forum.I would never buy a boat that I can't afford to have pulled. Your just asking to be taken advantage of. Good luck.

Thanks for both of your replies. I passed on the boat. Had some fiberglass damage on bow and owner had tried to fill it with caulk! Told me all I needed to know about maintenance. I have found and am buying a Yankee Dolphin 24. Giving up cabin room but I really love the classic lines and with trailer, possible to do coastal cruising in the Gulf. http://www.dolphin24.org/icelander.html. Older boat but always fresh water. And light usage due to storage half the year.
