Inaccurate Gauges

We have a 99 Hunter 410. All of our gauges, holding tank, fuel, and water are very inaccurate. They are inaccurate to the point that my aft water tank gauge showed as full when in fact the tank was bone dry. Since this problem has recurred several times and we have not gotten any kind of a solution from the factory or our dealer, Voyager Marine in MDR, how have other people solved this problem. It seems to me that I must develop a manual backup system to test all the levels, yet it looks to me like you cannot easily take the top of the tanks off to see what the levels are. If anyone has some insight here, I would greatly appreciate it.

Clean sensors

Sometimes the sensors in the tanks get fouled with crud and stick, giving you false readings. Try pulling them out of the tanks and cleaning them. Unfortunately, the holding tanks will need this frequently.

WEMA has a cleanout feature on their sensors

I rencently had to replace my waste tank indicator, as it was giving a false reading, too. If you order a new sensor from WEMA, the OEM tank indicator supplier for Hunter, they will offer to sell you a "flush kit" to enable you to flush your tank indicator. This flush kit consits of a piece of 1/4" tubing about 30" long and a little 1/4" brass gate valve. Cost is $12. This kit may be hooked up to your fresh water system and linked to a male adapter on the top of the waste unit. To flush the indicator unit, just open the gate valve and flush with fresh water while doing your pumpout. What this does, is backflush through the little holes in the sensor unit to flush out the caking waste that fouls your sensing unit. Anyway, that's WEMA's story. I just installed it this weekend and flushed once. Worked fine. Fortunately, the transom shower unit is right near the waste holding tank so it was a relativly inexpensive and uncomplicated installation. Just a couple of bucks of plastic fittings and a foot of water tube from Home Depot and your finished. Within a week of the waste tank indicator going bad, my fresh water indicator went bad, also. Sounds like GM is making these components. Planned obsolesence.... Hunter parts department can give you the phone number for WEMA. Hunter sells the tank indicators (same price as WEMA), but I don't know if they sell the flushing kits. Good luck. Wynn Ferrel S/V Tranquility

Hope you put in a back flow preventor, Wynn

When you open the gate valve, not only can the domestic water get into the holding tank, but waste could back up into the domestic system if you don't have a backflow preventor to stop this from happening. Otherwise, it seems like a pretty nifty way to keep the sensor clean. Regards, Doug

Guages

The water & waste tank Wema guages on our 1999 340 gave up after the first season in spite of cleaning the in- tank sensor unit. The thru tank fitting was also a source of leaks created by the pressure of the water in the tank. Replaced The Wema guages with "Snake River" externally mounted tank monitoring unit as sold by West Marine. So far so good & no leaks.

Hunter integrity?

these are new boats being discussed here - doesn't Hunter want to appear to be responsive and address these comments?

WEMA Website is ...

I found the WEMA website at: http://www.yachting.net/wemausa/ I also like to add that both my holding tank gauges have failed after one season and all of my water tanks gauges leak from the inside water pressure. Has anyone had better luck with a different brand?

Two replies in one

First: Hunter has a policy that they do not comment about their products on this site. They are, however, quite responsive to direct inquiries and can be reached at huntermarine@worldnet.att.net Second: The Snake River monitoring system is no longer, to my knowledge, sold at West Marine. It is sold in the chandlery this site :) It does not require any holes to be drilled in the tank, so does not foul or leak. However, it does require a compsoite tank and does not work with aluminum tanks. p.

acu-gauge

Installed the Snake River Acu-guage on my 410 this weekend. Whew. With three water tanks, two holding tanks and a fuel tank, that's a lot of fish-taping. A very doable weekend project, however, especially if two people work together to run the wires.

Acu Guage

Still available from West Marine. Check page 254 of their 2000 catalog. I ordered one from them in July.

Well, OK

I guess West Marine does have it... but we have it $20 cheaper. :) Support your local web site.
