In search of a rudder transom mount for a Point Jude 16

Hello all, I recently purchased a 1990 Point Jude 16 at an estate auction. It’s in great shape however when I got home and checked it out it is missing the rudder transom mount. I have the rudder and tiller but not the mount.

Any ideas where I can find a replacement or even the plans to make a new one?

I’ve attached a picture of my boat and a picture of the missing part I copied from the internet.

Thanks for all the help!

Do a search for Gudgeons and pintles. That’s the proper name for the part you’re searching for. Sailboat owners, (This website) sells them but so do lots of other places.

While they may be somewhat universal, if you can find a logo or writing on the hardware, it might help you find a matching set

What you haven't shown us are the pintles on your current rudder. You will need to know the pin offset, diameter, and length to find appropriate gudgeons.

On your boat, it would be fairly simple to fabricate gudgeons that would function well. The attached photo shows that the top gudgeon and bottom gudgeon are separate pieces. Each could be made from sheet metal. If you would like more info just ask...

I’m sorry but apparently I wasn’t clear about what I need - I need the WOOD part that the tiller mounts to and the rudder blade hangs from. It’s the part with pintles that hang on the transom. Here is a picture of what I need - I copied it from the internet.

Are you also missing the upper wooden part of the rudder that attaches it to the boat? How about the hinge bracket for the tiller? If it's just the pintles and gudgeons, those are usually generic and a few measurements are all you need to find them in a good rigging hardware catalogue such as Rigging Only or Rig-Rite Inc. - Masts, Booms, Spars, Rigging, and Hardware for Sailboats.

Oops, just saw your reply. I'm afraid you're looking at a jr. hi. woodshop project... if you can't find an owner's association or other small sailboat resource. That's a pretty cool looking skiff. I did a quick search and found info like history, specs, etc. I really hope you get that little sweatheart on the water... besides being extremely seaworthy (according to comments I read) it should turn a few heads in the parking lot. Designed in 1946 by Edson I. Schock (hmm any relation to WD Schock?, notable builder designer still in business)

Anyway, good luck. a good quality hardwood plank, a little skill with a router and a reasonable quantity of epoxy or helmsman spar urethane will put you on the water.

Ah - sorry - so you do have both pintals and gudgeons? Do you also have the metal straps that would hold that piece on?

If you have all the metal bits, then it would be a fairly simple task of measuring the width of wood needed to fit into the top - basically the same width as your tiller.

You can pretty much take that image and make a scale drawing. Then make the missing wood piece. I highly doubt you are going to find that available. It will have to be fabricated. Print out that photo - take your dimensions from the parts on your boat and you will have a scale based specifically on your boat. Then use those measurements to scale out what you'd need for your wood part. Does this make sense?

It would probably be best to take another picture of your boat stern while it's parked on the trailer showing what rudder hardware you have on it now if any. Congratulations on purchasing a small sailboat and a new language.

You'll most likely have to make new wooden pieces but heres the Point Jude Class Association's info:

There's a ton of good info in this thread

The gudgeons are on the boat but no I don’t have the pintles because I don’t have the wood part they mount to. Thanks!

Thanks everyone for helping a newbie! Here is what I have and my dad is an accomplished wood worker but he needs a pattern.
What is the hole in the top of the rudder blade for? There are two - a horizontal thumb size hole and then a vertical pencil size hole. I’m guessing something to do with “kick-up”?

I believe from what I can see, this is what the different parts of your existing rudder are.

Tale the image yo have of what this wood piece should be and print it out. Then use it as a diagram to design the top part. I've labeled here a couple critical points.
