This subject (in-mast furling) has been about beaten to death, but I'd like to add my latest experience. I just returned from a sail from the SF Bay down to Monterey and back. That's about an 18 hour sail. Although we had to motor a great deal of the way, we also sailed a fair bit. At one point, for about 3-4 hours I was on watch by myself. We were sailing close hauled for that entire time. I went from the sail being completely furled to about half way up to all the way and back down to half-way, with several points in between. The other crew members were asleep when I was doing this. The seas were extremely rough. I don't think I'd have felt comfortable trying to reef a main sail by myself in those conditions. I probably sacrifice some one to two knots of speed from the roller furled main, but to me it's worth it.
Previously, I would have recommended against in-mast furling, but I feel differently now.
That's my experience, anyway.
