I getting ready to install an Raymarine in-hull transducer. Iv'e read the archives and it seems that the best place to install it is next to the bilge pump. Does anyone have different experience? How did it work? Thanks and have a great holidays.

Another Option

I saw an installation in a magazine where instead of cutting a hole in the hull, they mounted the transducer in a plastic pipe glued to the inside of the hull.(about 4")with a cap on it with the cable going through it. Then you fill it with mineral oil. Suspose to perform just as well, and it never will leak. Just a thought.

Not Even That Much Work

Lots in the archives on this. What I've done on mine is: 1. Using Vaseline on the bottom of the tranducer to fill any voids between it and the hull I found the place where the transducer shoots through the hull. BTW I have a transom mount transducer but it works through the hull just fine. 2. Glue the tranducer in place with epoxy making sure there are no air bubbles. There is much more detail in the archives and I am on my third glass of wine so your better off going there. In truth I have yet to make it to step 2 it has been there for nine months with the Vaseline and works fine. I'll get to it one of these days when it gets too cold to sail and I can only tinker around in the boat.

Wax it

Found it in the archives and it worked for me like a charme: use the wax-ring that is used to set toilets. Its a $2 item from the building supply stores, it can be formed into whatever shape, stays soft so you can pry the transducer off if need be but has great holding/suction power. Happy sails

Ziploc Bag First

This has been in earlier posts and it has worked well for me. Put the transducer in a Ziploc bag filled with water and move it around the boat to find the best location. Put a big !! gob of silicone in that spot and push the transducer into it. If any problems come up down the road it will be less of a hassle to remove instead of epoxy.

agree with the silicone

The silicone worked great for me. Just avoid air bubbles, and while you are at it, tack the cable down with a little glob of silicone to keep it from flopping around.

problems *666

When the time came to install my garim fish finder and replace the old depth recorder, the in hull transducer seemed the way to go. did not want the extra expense of hauling the boat to install a through hull transducer. came here to the forum and read all the post on the zip lock bags, wax, oil, ect. purchased the inhull transducer from garmin and pulled the wire from the unit mounted in the cockpit to the vberth. tryed the ziplock, then the wax and oil. the transducer would not shoot through the hull. i have never found out if it was the fiberglass or bottom paint or what the problem was. the guys in the boat yard expressed the inhull mount was not a good way to go if you want the full benefit of a fish finder and even for depth it can reduce reliability shooting through the hull. got the boat out of the water in september and installed the through hull transducer. everthing is working great, maybe the problem was between the keyboard and the chair?

Ken, do you have a cored hull?

maybe the air gap was the cause. I've tried several of the methods mentioned with success. Wish there would have been a way to keep our latest scanning transducer 'in hull'. But, alas. A picture of it is on the last film strip on our web site.

cored hull

originaly thought it may be a cored hull causing the problem. but that is not the case. have never found out what the problem exactly is. it has to be something in the paint or glass, most likely the bottom paint(through hull transducers warn not to paint). just wanted to get out the message that the in hull transducer installation is not the best way to go for certain applications of depth recorders or fish finders.
