I'm a racing rules guy. But Paul was a RULES GUY'S RULES GUY. Never met a person so versed, so deeply in tune with the nuances of the RRS.

So in honor, here is gist of the last rules discussion I had with Paul.

Boat X fouls you, and you immediately fly your protest flag and call 'PROTEST'. They hear you and do their correct turn(s). Do you then take down your flag? Cite relevant rule (OK its 61.1) and explanation for why you think so.

PS -

61.1. Informing the Protestee

a. A boat intending to protest shall inform the other boat at the first reasonable opportunity. When her protest will concern an incident in the racing area that she was involved in or saw, she shall hail ‘Protest’ and conspicuously display a red flag at the first reasonable opportunity for each. She shall display the flag until she is no longer racing.

I'm not a racer, but I'd have to say that that rule is defective. It would only allow a single protest per race, unless the fouled boat carried multiple red flags, no? If the rule is correct, how is the second foul, by a different boat, protested?

Works like this... the key is informing the boat in particular by hailing PROTEST at the first reasonable opportunity. If the flag is already up, that's OK. Sometimes that first 'reasonable opportunity' is 20 minutes later, and that's OK too.

Maybe we could create a rules forum and name it after Paul Kresge. Seems to me to be a nice tribute.

Do you know what would be really cool, is an online Racing Rules of Sailing quiz like the USGA's online golf rule quizzes:

Not sure we have enough interest at SBO to make it worthwhile, but I support it.. The rule question I post in the thread honoring Paul gathered exactly one response.

Yeah maybe not a hotbed of excitement but with a little development maybe. A weekly question perhaps. We can argue for 20 pages about Rules of the Road, or anchors. As for your post it may have needed a bit more time. By the time I saw it, it was answered. But maybe another forum would be more receptive.
In any event, I just sailed a six day delivery with very little adverse weather and the unfortunate Mr Kresge loses his life on a high resevoir in the Rocky Mountains during an afternoon race. The risk profile doesn't compute but that's what happened.

Um, the question was never answered. I replied to an indirect question.
