I have been at this a long time, but I find I have holes in my experience and knowledge as well as having some misconceptions. I learn from this site, same as the newbees, and appreciate the respectful style most on this board observe. One thing the years have taught me is that just when I think I have this sport figured out, something humbles me.I passed through your neck of the woods last summer and found the small boat channel very humbling, very challenging, and very beautiful. I spent a few days in Perry Sound and that port may be the best sailing grounds I have ever been in - except for the winters. Plenty of room in the sound for a good day sail in reasonable protected waters, but lots of interesting anchorages and destinations nearby - not to mention the absolutely stunning natural beauty of the area.
