Ross, I know I can be rough

but not to newbies that need help. I try to help them the best I can. If you want to run with the big dogs you have to get off the chair.

Joe, not you, I was just responding

to your thoughtful post. Way to go, Ross, well put.

ross, I agree that whoever sent emails to Seadance went way beyond the line. I have, however, found over this winter some rather belligeranant posts - twice I have been the the object, one saying "who the f*** are you..." I don't think we need that type of approach - or at least, I know I don't need that type of approach. I

Higgs, My experience has shown

that people who have very low self esteem work harder to pull others down than they do to raise themselves up. I have had small smart aleckly kids rudely ask me who I am and my response is always the same."I'm Ross! who are you? same tone as the first question, it never fails to bring them down a notch. There is a story told of a sailor spinning a yarn and someone rudely interrupting him with "that's impossible!" To which the story teller replied,"was you there Charlie?"

Ross and fellow sailors so well put

It does seem that we all need to police ourselves concerning what we say here. I have learned an awful lot reading here and getting references. I got more timid about starting a thread for a while cause it seems all you get is ragged on, or get told "check the archives and quit waisting space". And I can tell when Ross or Alan or Stu or Mortyd or "ObiFred" are giving me a little "spray over the dodger". Thats fun and all part of it. When I am on hook or at the dock I visit with fellow sailors and I darn sure dont sit there and critique them or belittle them or the boat which is most likely their pride and joy. It would be interesting to be a "fly on the bimini" and listen to see how some of these know it all skippers treat "their" crew when daysailing or how effective they use CRM (crew resource management) when the chips are down. No one should be afraid to ask anything about our craft because someone is going to make them feel like an idiot for asking. Why do we all enjoy checking in here three or four times a day :) Its fun, its great and it makes us think about sailing... which I am totally addicted to. Cheers Rick

Rick, I think we all know the difference between

ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is like a dirty face it is easy to cure. But stupidity goes clear to the bone.

Aren't we all newbies

At some time or another we all had to learn to sail and / or learn to work on our boats. It becomes a consuming passion, for some in the moment of passion we buy something and then discover later that it wasn't as shiny as we originally thought. Seadance was going through an emotional roller coaster. She came here for help, which should be the basis of any forum, and was slammed. As another newbie ( just bought our first boat) I can appreciate the excitement they were going through and can only imagine the heartbreak of the struggles they now face. Hopefully Phil will contact her and convince her to return. There seems to be a lot of people here willing to help as much as they can. I know I've received very lengthy explanations to my questions on things that might be obvious to others but as a newbie, I'm sometimes in "uncharted waters"

Guys I missed the post..??

Who attacked her? Sounds like she needed advice and some of the pack jumped on her for being a woman? That's very, very low and ridiculous. I was the brunt of a personal attack & name calling, right out of the gate, just yesterday and I even through some mud back myself but neither I nor the attacker are newbies and it did not hurt my feelings in the least as I'm here to learn and help. There is NO excuse for this type of behavior, with a new boat owner, as it is stressful enough anyway. I really hope she comes back and we can guide her on her way to happy sailing days...

I have been at this a long time, but I find I have holes in my experience and knowledge as well as having some misconceptions. I learn from this site, same as the newbees, and appreciate the respectful style most on this board observe. One thing the years have taught me is that just when I think I have this sport figured out, something humbles me. I passed through your neck of the woods last summer and found the small boat channel very humbling, very challenging, and very beautiful. I spent a few days in Perry Sound and that port may be the best sailing grounds I have ever been in - except for the winters. Plenty of room in the sound for a good day sail in reasonable protected waters, but lots of interesting anchorages and destinations nearby - not to mention the absolutely stunning natural beauty of the area.

newbies

higgs... we've been in, on and around Georgian Bay for most of our lives. Both my wife and I camped in the Provincial Park near Parry Sound. When we got married we continued to camp there and watch / drool and dream of being on the sail boats that anchored in the bay off the beach at the park. Finally 25 years later we are realizing that dream. Maine, you were one of the ones I was refering to for the involved response. I was amazed at the depth of your repsonse to my anchor question and learned considerably from it and the other repsonses. I have the Rocna 15 on order. Thanks again from a fellow newbie Scott.

Scott..

Glad I could help. You're going to love the Rocna! I may upgrade my Manson just for the heck of it, and to do some actual comparisons between the real McCoy and the knock off. My guess is that the Rocna is actually a slightly better perfomer than the Manson... You won't be disapointed in that anchor! Happy Sailing

Nice N Easy

To Seadance

Please let me apologize for any and all on this board who offended. This is a good board, and while we do disagree from time to time, there is no place for the few misquided souls who have nothing better to do than throw insults. Mostly I think they are just trying to cover up their own lack of knowledge. I, and probably the vast majority on this board, would be very interested in knowing who the individual/individuals were. This person should be banned form the board.

I have appealed to Seadance to give us another try

and told her I would ask Phil to disable whatever process let some jerks send her personal e-mails. Also, I told her that she has plenty of supporters in the forum, and that we should be able to take care of the aforementioned jerks. I'm pretty bummed because her husband is now thinking about getting rid of the boat and with a little help/support, they might figure out a way to keep it and get done the work it needs and be able to enjoy sailing. We'll see...... Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

...I see you are doing the Ensenada race in NB. I'm in NA. Best of luck, and hope to run into you there. Sorry for the sidetrack on the thread, guys. Bob, glad you sent her the e-mail and hope she's up to reading this thread. It sounded like she had a good boat that just needed some modest maintenance, so I really also hope they reconsider selling it. BTW I've never heard of such hostility on the board of someone new and it's a lousy precedent. Rick D.

I must say

I have been on this forum for 4-5 years now and it did used to be more helpful. We seem to have a handful of people now who always want to show how knowledgable they are and that they are *right* about things. Sailing and boats are like most other things in life, there isn't just one right way. I also participate in the C25/250 forum and there are never fights and insults - just members helping each other. Remember what you learned in kindergarten - If you don't have something nice to say then keep your big mouth shut and your fingers off the keyboard. Also, if someone does attack you, just ignore it and the rest of us can tell him/her to cool it. Peer pressure is best.

I must admit

Last night I was poked into doing my first personal attack on a different thread. I wasn't happy about it but I can only take so much. I always try to stick to the facts and it really bugs me when somebody has a different viewpoint but only throws insults instead of facts in a rebuttal. Last night I felt I gave facts but I also responed with an insult and I appologize to the list for that. I purposely didn't read any posts today partly because I was disappointed in myself but also didn't want to get dragged into that again.

Franklin good on ya

I read that thread and it was pretty heated. I really dont think if we were all talking rafted up with a boat drink that we would be so overbearing shall we say. I will admit that judging from the typing perhaps some here including myself on occasion are better off typing than driving... love a good martini. You dont always have to expect a "pat on the back" when you make a post here. I think some live by that. When there is no wind you sail slow... fact. Still I wouldnt want to take your wind... probably put a shot across my bow :) Cheers Rick
