We've returned from our early spring oceanographic cruise downeast. Incredible trip. I doubt many Maine cruisers have had the Petit Mannan lighthouse 9 miles off their STARBOARD beam the last week in May.

No breakdowns, just had the cover to the anchor rode pipe snap off and a loose knob on the steering wheel brake (poor design by Edson). I did have a minor brain fade that escalated into a near death experience (seriously). An enormous effort, the first time I've thought maybe my heart could just quit, put me in position to save us from gruesome death (or at least a rescue I would never have lived down) by one of the most amazing bits of luck I have ever had. It's too good a story for the net, you'll all have to wait until the "Points East" article comes out.

I don't know how I'm ever going to catch up on what's gone on around here while I've been gone. Hopefully, that's a problem I'll have a lot this summer.

Sounds like a great trip

From the cookie trial it looks as if you went to Boise Bubert Island off Milbridge. That is one of my favorite islands on the coast. I spent three days there in pea soup with literally not even enough vis to see a lobster pot ten feet off the bow. We had lots of fun exploring & hiking the area. Looks like you also hit Somesville another great gunk hole..

Years ago, I sailed a Marshall 18 up Pigeon Hill Bay alone in October. Roger Duncan said of Pleasant Bay in the cruising guide at that time, "This is a bay waiting to be explored. Neither the author nor any of his correspondents know anything about it."

The vista of Pond Island in that unknown bay opening up in front of me as I rounded into the narrow channel between the bays ranks as one of the handful of greatest moments in my life.

The next cruising guide edition had the full run down on Pleasant Bay, the last to be covered. It was sort of like shooting the last of an endangered species.

Hey Roger, Pleasant Bay is my neighborhood. Besides Pond Island, there is Shipstern, Flint, Nash (with its lighthouse & sheep) Dyer, Foster, just to name a few.
Couldnt tell you how many times Im the only one out with a sail.

Welcome back, darn dem Canadians, eh?
Actually, they did us a great favor. I made the commitment to go where the scientists most wanted the data but it was nice to have a solid excuse to show my son more of Maine that he hasn't seen. It was also COLD even in Maine and would have been more so in Fundy. The way the weather worked out, we would have been pinned down in the bay waiting to fight our way down the Grand Manan channel fully reefed and beating our brains out. I've got no complaints at all with how it turned out. I'll enjoy the BOF a lot more after this month.
