If you could change one thing about your boat

While most of us love our current boat, theres always that one thing that wed change. Chances are, it would cost more than the value of the boat or be flat out impossible. but we can always dream.

If the boat genie granted you one wish to change a single thing about your boat -- no matter how impractical -- what would it be?

I'd change Dragonfy's centerboard trunk and CB design. First, I'd make it top accessible. I'm hoping I will, someday, get the chance to do it. Put a removable or flip-open cap on the CB trunk and design the pivot pin to drop in from above. Close-off the through hull pin install and put a slot down the inside of the trunk. I'd be able to pull the cb from the boat on the water or on the trailer, change lift cable without having her out of the water. Then, I'd, ideally, make the CB raise and lower with a gear and a worm screw, instead of a cable. That one seems a little more out there, but still doable. If not that, then add a method of locking the cb in the down position so it doesn't fold up, in case of a knock down.

There is so much more, like solar electric independence, a drive platform ..., but that's the one thing I'd like the most.

An infinite supply of hot and cold potable water without using a generator or motor. (I'm sure I read to dream in the intro, LOL...)

How about sailing in the great lakes with a good hand pump Katadyne filter? That should do it. I do like the idea. Is there a hand operated reverse osmosis desalinater on the market?

The hand filters are survival level. I'm thinking like I don't care if I take a 20 minute shower... The one thing I really miss when sailing are showers that have no end other than when I'm ready... With no concern for how much water I've used. And I really like hot showers... I can make due with cat baths, but my number one "miss" are nice long hot showers...

To remove the ton of stuff my wife brings on the boat.... 6 coffee mugs, 2 skillets, a small library, bedding, floats, a billion bungees and clips, 6 plates, silver ware, cups... ugh!
I need to just buy a go-slow IP and live with it! My tri has not seen 9 knots this year... and it ain’t ‘cause of the wind!

I'm taking this to mean something you wish could change about the boat that you CANNOT. It's easy to buy new gear. That just takes some cash.

I wish BlueJ had 4 extra degrees of spreader sweep. Then I dump the backstay and would fly a fathead main.

Replace the wood cap rails (that require annual varnish) with a metal perforated rail... that I can attach blocks to for sail trim.

I saw a PSC 31 of recent vintage that had just that... and yet just enough brightwork in other areas to still glimmer. Perforated toerails are a nice thing to have.

Of course I'd really like three feet more boat too... GRIN

A lead keel instead of my cast iron one. I wouldn't go deeper where we sail.

The one thing about my old boat I'd ask the Genie for, make it maneuverable under power, without losing it's seal like quality of slithering over lobster buoy warp. Only a genie could do that.

Ooh! A way to clean up the wake this thing throws! It is loud and obnoxious. I have heard of people extending hulls to clean up wake. The Genie could make that happen for me.

Closed head compartment. Or at least that is my wife's interest. My last boat was much better equipped (cruising cat).

No real gripes or I'd fix them. The hulls shapes were gradually upgraded on newer models.

Oh, I know. Rotating mast. Doable, but I know I won't.

What immediately springs to mind with my '96, Catalina 28, is for the engine to be quieter.

I thought of engine noise and heat, but I guess I could do something about that. So, I want a bigger V-berth.

Deeper battery storage space so I could use golf car batteries.

Andrew, Andrew, Andrew. You sail on Seneca Lake. With your wife. Who enjoys sailing with you. Maybe you need to find a good counselor. ;-)
