Identifying Bearings no-name Catalina 22 trailer

Finally launched my Catalina 22 today (had to re-core the cabin top). Unfortunately, I destroyed a wheel bearing on the way to the boat launch. The launch is only a 15 minute drive from the house. Didn't notice anything weird (noise, etc) until we were pretty much at the launch. Decided to get the boat off of the trailer (we keep it on a mooring) since we had people with us to help, etc.

Now I need to figure out what to do about the trailer. It's still at the launch (not in the way, but it can't stay there). I can't find any markings on it for a manufacturer, etc. I'm sure it used to have some, but neither I nor the PO could find any when I bought the boat. Take the tire off, pull what remains of the bearings out and take them to an auto parts store? No trailer stores around, but a kind person at the boat launch mentioned that the local auto parts store had a lot of trailer bearings in-stock.

Think that you are on right track. Remove tire & hub. Cleanup hub & remove bearings. Take old bearings, seal, & hub to auto parts store to match bearings & seal. After cleaning bearings & seals, you may be able to see bearing manufacturer & size / part number inscribed on bearing race. Repack bearing with grease & reinstall. Two to three hour job including trip to auto store! When you verify that your repair is successful & get the trailer back home, best to replace bearings on remaining wheel before trailering boat again. I have always used “bearing buddies” on my trailers. Many claim that they really don’t help; however, at least it permits you to periodically add fresh grease into the hub. In all the years I have launched in salt water, I have never had a bearing fail, so I feel that they help.

You will probably need the 1.98 bearings with matching racers. Some refer to the bearings as 2 inch.

Bearing Buddies are covers with a grease fittings which are great to have as @BigEasy pointed out

One has to read & follow instructions carefully when using “Bearing Buddies”. If you put too much grease in the hub, it over pressurizes when bearings & shaft heat up, & seals will dislodge. I believe that is the reason for negative reviews. There are detailed instructions on how much grease to add to the hub, for bearing buddies to perform properly.
