I want to pick up some good paperbacks to read. I would like non-fictional books on bluewater sailing or Live-a-board books. I want them to have the "how to do this and that" and the "Don't bother with this, you don't need it" and "Make sure you do this" information. Books written by single handed sailors are desirable too. Any Idea's? Thanks

....Books written by single handed sailors are desirable too.... Tania Aebi's 'Maiden Voyage', about her solo circumnavigation. A great story..

Anything by Hal Roth will be good

Tristan Jones wrote semi-fiction based on his experiences. Everything by the Pardeys' is worth reading. "There be no Dragons" by Reese Palley

Good Books

Just finished reading "Flirting With Mermaids" and "Sailing Alone Around The World". First is a series of stories from a delivery captain as he makes deliveries up and down the east coast, accross the Atlantic and Pacific. Second is the Story of Joshua Slochum as he circumnavigates around the world in the late 19th century. Both are great books

Some good titles

Here are some of my favs: Godforsaken Sea, Derek Lundy; edge of your seat adventure in the Vendee Globe single handed round the world race Lone Voyager, Joseph Garland, heroic Gloucester fisherman sets trans Atlantic solo record Sailing to the Reefs, Bernard Moitessier, legendary French solo circumnavigator shipwrecked on reef builds new boat by hand Endurance, Alfred Lansing, Shackelton survives the Antarctic and saves all of his crew. Unbelievable stuff. Over the Edge of the World, Laurence Bergreen. Magellan circumnavigates, dies, and loses most of his crew. Makes you glad its the 21st century. All should be available on Amazon in paper. Good reading.

Tom Neale -

All In The Same Boat - he tells what has worked for them over several years of cruising - I enjoyed the book. Flirting with Mermaids as previously recommended was good too. A couple others - The Seaworthy Offshore Sailboat by John Vigor and No Shoes Allowed by Jan de Groot. I did not particularly enjoy Sailing the Dream by John F McGrady - a little short on boat/cruising detail and long on the author's introspective musings.

Ron, that ought to keep you busy for the

rest of this year. Most towns have wonderful used book stores and the people that run them do so because they love books. Find one near you and talk to the people in the shop. They Know.

" The Log of Donald Crowhurst"

Ron, Good idea. Shore beats swabs probs...whoops, "issues" with boats, or politics ugh! The L. of D. Crowhurst was of the first 'round the world single handed race with the likes of: Robin Knotts Johnson (a great saior of the finest order, nice person too), Montessior, and the best saiors of the time. It is all completely factual, except for a few authors notes on what 'must' have happened and a real twist at ending that is only found in real life; copied for novels...;-) Someone mentioned Triston Jones? I have read 'em all. A superior Welsh sailor, and writer for that matter, but, though based on fact, I would not call Impossible voyage non-fiction, or the others for that matter...he was a great taleteller... Two years Before the Mast is another favorite of all... My favorite factual is Robert Manrys honest report on his cross the Atlantic expedition, "Tinkerbelle" a 14ft wood center-board that made the Atlantic crossing, and that record will never be broken, not with the gear and zero support he had. Best all time novel, and mostly fact with excellent cruising tips, "Overboard" a cruise across the Pacific, and a great read too. All of these are in the liberary of congress, just gave "Tinkerbelle" to a friend, and "The Log of Donald Crowhurst" is hard to find (folks steal it from libraries). The best survival sailing story, with a lotta real sailing stories in it too, is: "Adrift" by Steve Callahan, a friends sailing buddie too. Well, finally...I knew there would be sumthin of value I could share with all the mates and lasses...;-)
