Icom m802

Hi all,

I have had an Icom M802 aboard and I’m looking for options to connect it to GPS. I have a Furuno GP39 that is wired to the autopilot and wondered if I could link to that? The other option would be finding where the VHF is getting the Lat and Long from. This should be simple if I can locate the little wires behind the navigation panel.

Yep, saw this diagram and wondered how to do the connecting. The GPS unit should have a 0183 connection port. Or a bundle of little wires that connect using one of those little connecting bars.

I just checked the Furuno installation guide and it has 1 port “NMEA0183 V1.5/2.0/3.0: 1 port, current loop USB: 1 port, USB2.0”. So I should be able to find where the little wires are hidden.

On the Icom diagram, would these wires be the ACC port? Or just use a coax from the antenna port?

I found a download from Icom with wire pairings for different GPS units, not Furuno but I could just match them. I’ll check with Furuno tomorrow.

The thing that the Icom may not be providing is the power for the GPS receiver. However, on my older Icom IC-707 (Ham rig), power is available on pin 8. Older Garmin (GPS12, GPS72) have data/power port on the back of their units. I use the GPS72 connected to my Standard Horizon DSC capable VHS. Without the GPS (there is none in the radio) the radio goes crazy.

With that in mind, any GPS that has a data port on the unit (which is not many) should work seeing you only need data out and data ground. The other two connectors are for data in and power.

If you can find a GPS unit that will put data out and data ground out of the unit, try it and see if you are successful. Be careful tapping off the Furuno, it might add too much of a load to the host unit. Or, the host unit may no like what it is connect to. Worst case, but worth thinking about.

After chatting with the Furuno tech, I followed the wires from the GP39 gps unit to the buss bar that was labeled with the pairs of wires. I added the pair I made with coax from the Icom gps port following the + and - diagram. I now have Lat and Long on my SSB radio, but the time is off by 1 hour. Close enough.
