Ice box won't close

I'm the new owner of a Pearson 31. During my first sail, the ice box opened as it should, but upon leaving the boat for a few weeks, I left the ice box opened and "latched" all the way open. When I returned, I could not get the hydraulic cylinder to release allowing the ice box to close. any thoughts appreaciated.

not familiar w/problem but if it's a gas, not hydraulic, cylinder which is what is usually used on lids, you could likely get a new one from McMaster Carr
