I know this is a common post but I am finaaly getting around to doing something to keep it from draining to the bilge. How in the world do you get to it? I can't seem to locate it no matter what hatch I look through. Any insight is appreciated. I sail a Cat 30 1985. Thanks

Ice box drain location

I am not positive that your ice box drain is in the same location as my 89' C-30, but if you remove the aft drawer unit(next to steps) it should be visible. You will have to work the drawer unit a bit to remove it, but it can be done. While you have the drawer unit out you can increase the drawer lengths by almost 50% with some woodworking talent. This is a great project for the winter months of no sailing.

Drain

The other thing to do with the drawers removed and ice box exposed is to insulate it on the three sides and bottom to keep the cold in. I used insulating foam board. One idea for the ice box drain that works for me. Run a longer hose from the drain to the bilge area where you can get to it. Put a plug in the end of the hose and drain it to a bucket once a day. Be careful if you're thinking about connecting it to the sink drain. You'll likely end up with saltwater in your ice box. Other option is to connect it to a small pump and pump it to a thru hull drain. Fair winds. Joe

I looked for mine yesterday

Hey Dave, Good question! I have an 85 C30 also, so I went out and looked for my drain, as I liked the idea of insulating the Ice box. I found the drain hose but it looks like I will have to take out the complete framework of the drawers, I can't reach the drain or insulate the box without taking all that out. I think I will do it anyway. I just replaced the tubing on the fresh water system, they were all moldy on the inside, so while the boat is all pulled apart and compartments are empty, I might as well do it all. Good luck, Dean www.blowinganddrifting@yahoo.com
